well yesterday the right front hub went bad because of a bad bearing...the shop charged me $430 to do the repair. they claimed that the parts for this repair cost about $330. i was wondering if this sounds about right?

That sounds in the ball park in my area. Front hub from local parts store is something like $225-250 but your shop is going to have to have some markup to pay the bills.

Had one local place quote about $800 to do both but that also included a lifetime warranty on the hubs

Ditto. $200-$300 for the part and an hour to an hour and a half of labor to install it.

That sounds accurate...

That sounds accurate... autohubs are very $$$ and cost double that of manual hubs.. Most members swapped to manuals since its cheaper and manuals are many times stronger than autos... Autos are fine for normal on-road - lite wheeling, but they will eventually break if you really stress them (as in moderate + wheeling).

The hubs he's referring to on a '99 are completely different than the hubs on a 93.

Not a problem.... we've all done it. :)

do you need to change the hubs as well, if you're only changing the wheel bearings on a 4x4?

The front wheel bearings on a 2nd gen are a sealed assembly referred to as a 'hub'. The 'hub' on a 1st gen vehicle is what locks and unlocks the wheel from the axle assembly.

So, to answer your question, if you change the wheel bearings on the front of a 4x4, you ARE changing the hub. They are one and the same thing.

alright thanks for that info.

I did one hub on my 98 AWD three years ago. The hub was $205 from F.ord then.
