OK, it's a Ranger question, technically, but you guys should be able to help out... On my '93 Ranger, occasionally when cornering, I get what sounds like two gears trying to mesh together (kind of like a buzzing of a non-synchronized manual trans) followed by a really loud, jarring "CLUNK!" from someplace in the drivetrain.

This occurs seemingly at random intervals, and seems to be related to the 4wd. If I lock the hubs (they're still the junk OE auto-hubs) all is well until I reverse once, and then, sometimes everything is fine, other times, the noise occurs. Driving straight ahead, everything is OK... it only happens when cornering, at about 1/2 turn of the steering wheel, I can start to hear the buzzing, and if I slow down a bit or sharpen the turn, the clunk happens. it sounds/feels like maybe the transfer case engaging for a second without synchronizing the input shaft. (?!!?) I'm stumped. It almost sounds like the same kind of clunk as when the driveline is bound up and forced out of 4 hi or something, but that's not it... I onder if the shifter motor on the trans might not quite be fully disengaging? (Hence the speed differential of front and rear driveshafts when cornering) or maybe one of the hubs is not unlocking and spinning the front driveshaft through the diff? I thought I had finally managed to get the hubs to unlock... drove all the way to school and parked, no problem. Drove it home (without even thinking about the 4wd) and it did it again, pulling into my parking space. ?!?!

Regardless of what it is, it's loud, and I seriously think I'm gonna break something if it doesn't heal itself... in fact, it seems like it's getting worse... Sorry for the ramblings-on.....

Sounds like your auto hubs are giving out

yep yep sounds like the same problem i am trying to avoid, every now and then i get that problem that your talking about... mine comes from the front passenger tire.
most likely your problem as well as mine is the auto hubs are going out.
the real question is now , what are you going to do about it?
A: spend alot of money to replace fords cheap ass hubs

I am changing mine out next month mine have been bad for over a year:rolleyes:

yes you most defintly need to change those crappy hubs, you will not regret it. i wouldn't pay more than 160 for the set. i live on oregon and i went to baxters to get mine, cheaper than 4wheelparts or anyother placew i could find.

you can try a junk yard but they wnated 300 for the oem manuels, i told them to screw off nad that i could buy new waren hubs for half the price...... they had nothing to say.....:nono:

so hope that you get rid of this problem soon or you could be left with a bigger bill than the 160 for new hubs.

or some problems the next time it snows:(
