I have a giant popping/clunking in the front end and the previous owner says it is the timing chain. I think it is in the four wheel drive unit. The cv's are newer, so how do I disconnect the four wheel drive to check it?

welcome to the forum! might help if you have some more vehicle info. 5.0 awd or 4.0 4x4? when does it pop/clunk?

oops, just the facts man.

This p.o.s. has a 5.0 and the popping happens whenever i put the truck under load. I can hold the brakes and gas it and it will pop but whenever i drive it it hits whenever i accelerate.

remove the front drive shaft to to help narrow it down. if the noise is still there its not the 4x4. Does it do it in reverse under load? in neutral?
how many miles on it?

agreed. make the noise when ya corner?

Transfer case. Mine did the same. Lay down *next to it* and have someone ride the brake and crawl 'til it pops. It should be evident it is coming from the tcase. I swapped mine out with used when it did it. Been good for about 30k miles so far.

Thanks brothers. I will try listening to the t-case first to see if it eminates from there and move on to the drive shaft pull after that. the noise is so wierd, there is no rhyme or reason why it really happens. the XLT has 170,000 miles on it and the front end just got re-done (alignment and such).
