I put installed the new o-rings for the upper intake...... started the truck...she ran great.......at one stoplight I got a very hard shudder and sputter then it went away......I got the CEL light back on and checked under the hood and sure enough the MAF connecter wasn;t connected....when i went to restart her I got this godawful shudder and rattling like noise and tons of smoke coming from the exhaust.....and now it won't go away....would this be cause by not running with the maf connected? And what would cause the smoke?

did you clear the computers memory after intalling your O rings and running without the MAS connected?

Sounds like something is still not correct under the hood, are you sure you got it all back together properly?

The smoke may be steam. You may be trying to burn coolant. Didn't you also just replace the lower intake gaskets?

I'd pull spark plugs and take alook to see if they're wet.

Check the color of the smoke.

White is coolant.
Black is fuel.
Blue is oil.

Couple of Questions from the Desperate

Check the color of the smoke.

I didn't get a good view when I started it back up but my girlfriend is convinced the smoke is white.....

In response to 410Fortune: I was/am sure I got everything reconnected.....but can't take for granted that something isn't amiss. The thing I don't get is why it ran ok for a couple of hours(not solid driving) and then started the shaking and smoking....I would have figured that it would have done that right away if I hadn't reconnected everything correctly.

In response to NHale623: Are the blue 0-rings for the upper or lower intake......below is a link with pictures of the 0-rings I replaced......the surface I that was under the intake I removed........ is the whole black plastic piece I removed the upper intake? Or the Upper and Lower? And where would the coolant be coming from and leaking to..... Any advice, or help is greatly appreciated.....

Where does coolant leak if you have

a problem with your intake manifold o-rings?

pretty sure the collant leaks are associated with the lower prtion of the intake. i've never been there but i dont see any reason for coolant to have anything to do witht he upper intake/plenums.

wIERD THING

I am not seeing any drop in coolant?

The top photo in the group you provided a link to is the upper intake. The lower intake bolts to the heads, and has the fuel rails and injectors mounted on it. I knew you were replacing the upper intake o-rings, but I wasn't sure if you had also removed the lower intake. That's why I asked the question.

If it were mine, I'd check the oil and see if there was any water in the pan. Check the coolant, and see if there's any oil. Pull the spark plugs and see what they look like. It sure sounds like water is getting in the cylinders (white smoke/steam, shudder).

Did you clear the codes after you re-plugged in the MAF? Have you scanned for any new codes since this happened?

Well it wsn't coolant

but there was an inordinately large amount of oil in the intake when I removed it this afternoon....could the intake shaking loose cause alot of oil to be sucked from the pcv on the valve cover into the intake? Also when I removed the intake the first time the PCV hose going into the intake was cracked...the big elbow...would a smaller diamter hose cause this oil infusion as well?

Thanks to my girlfriends teenager

I have to put off my hopeful re-repair of my Sport for a day or two...since he saw fit to monkey with the trunk of My aunts Saturn(I've been borrowing) while I had it jacked up in front to replace the brake pads.....and the left front rotor got up close and personal with the top of my foot!!!!!

got the pcv elbow on order(hard to believe that is not an onhand item anywhere around here)

Though I wouldn't buy it if the local dealership had it in stock....I'm not to sure they aren't some sort of unidentified CroMagnon subhumans....

Excessive oil in the intake is not a good sign. You're on the right track by fixing the PCV connections. Are you certain the PCV itself is functioning correctly? Does it rattle when you shake it?

You may have fouled one or more plugs if there is that much oil in the intake. I think you should pull the spark plugs and look at them. Clean and regap them at a minimum. They may be fouled with oil, causing a misfire that would cause the shudder.

Sorry to hear about your foot. That must have hurt.

Yeah...it hurts worse now LOL..... The last time I removed the PCV it rattled but I am thinking with this much oil it won't be a bad idea to just replace it......they aren't very expensive and it's better to be safe than sorry. Spark plugs...ugh.....this is the only vehicle that I've had to remove wheels to get to plugs hehe.....but since I have to wait on the PCV elbow I might as well look into everything now....before It catches up to me in a very unfriendly manner later :)
