My dad drives a 94 explorer, 2wd, and I think it's an xlt. Anyway, I found this site on a whim and it looks cool. I was wondering if you all could help me.

Well, my dad has had this vehicle since it was new and has made zero mods to it. It is havening trouble as of late. It doesn't start well, and basically is falling apart. He told me it sounded like it was trying to run on 2 cylinders. I don't know what that means exactly. He said it might be a problem with the fuel injector pump.

So, I was trying to figure out if there were aftermarket parts available for his explorer that would fix it up. Say a high performance fuel inject and fuel rail. Maybe a new intake and filter, and other mods that would just make it a little better, maybe even last longer since the factory parts are worn down a lot now.

I went through all the trouble to register just to post this one message, so any help would be greatly appreciated. If there are any sites I could go to let me know. Anyways, I'm just going sit and wait for the reply.

First off I'd like to welcome you to the site!! This is a cool place to hang out and learn some stuff, if you are interested. There is a wealth of information here, so read up if you want, and enjoy your stay. Welcome aboard!!

Now, onto your problem with some more questions. How many miles does the truck have on it?? When you say that your dad has made zero mods to the truck, does that include maintainance as well? If it does, then there are a number of things that you could change to make the engine run better. Spark plugs, spark plug wires, fuel filter, and air filter are all relatively easy and inexpensive items to replace. If these maintainance items have been changed already, you may want to look into changing the fuel pressure regulator. Has the check engine light ever come on? If so, get a code reader or go to a place that does and get the codes pulled. That alone may point you to the problem. Hope this helps a bit.

I'd like to start off by welcoming you to the site. You'll find any answer you need right here. :)

I'd say start with the simple stuff first. Read on the "explorer tips" page on how to clean the MAS. It's a problem on the older explorers and could cause poor running. If it feels like only 2 cylinders are running, check the plugs and wires. If these are bad the engine will misfire. Hope this helps.

It's hard to figure out what’s wrong with the info you gave. Could be any # of things. Here is a list of things that you should ck out.
1- Plugs & wires (when was the last time they were changed)
2- Fuel filter (clogged)
3- Lose vacuum line
4- Bad gas

If you whant to fix it your self goto the local Autozone or such and pick up a code scanner. It should cost less than $40. It will tell you what trouble codes the computer has.
Tell us what you find out.

I had some bad mexican food last night, talk about bad gas. :)

Any way, welcome to the site. I think the other posts covered what you should check on so I'll just say hope it all works out.

When is mexican food realy bad?

Ok, the vehicle has over 160,000 miles on it. He does maintenance it. Umm...I don't know much else about it, like I said it is his X. Maybe I'll get him on here to talk to you all about it. You seem really helpful. I wonder if the code reader would be a good father's day present? Probably not...he can buy that.

Well, I'll post more on this later, after I find out more. Let me tell you a lil more info about the problems. I drove it a while ago and these are the things I noticed...I had to restart it a couple times because the engine kept on dying right after I cranked it....he got a new clutch a while back or so he says, it is soooo hard to push in, it feels like a work out....the shifter seems to move a lot, I'm talking about when it is in 3rd gear the shifter can still move 2 to 4 inches on each side, isn't that not good?....and I think that is all, oh some wierd rattling noises when accelerating or something.

Some times (like caddybill said) Vacume lines have come off at the upper intake on the driver side. listen for Air leaks while the truck is running. Our 91 Xlt use to do this a lot.
