I am in the UK
I had a 93 ex US import only had minor wear and tear issues. Now have 97 ex with a lot of wear and tear issues.
First job drain 1 litre of ATF previous owner overfilled it a bit.

I believe the diff would have originally been filled with 80/90 and had the ford friction modifier added. now over time this would have degraded and as you have eluded to the car not really being looked after, it has probably never been changed. The recommended gear oil now is 75/140 with no need for the modifier if you use a fully synth for limited slip spec.
Also how much came out when you drained it? I'm betting less than you had to put in to fill it
