I finally have my "new" truck (explorers tow well)

That's it. He restors a old cars and turns them into Hotrods. His favorite are the 40 Willys. He takes a piece of vintage tin and turns it into something nice. See ya going to catch some Zs myself.

Forgot to mention. I'll post some pics of the before and after of his 40 ford. Of course you allready seen the before. But I'll do them side by side.

Well...its slow, but its a start.

The grill and front bumper are all polished up nice. The rear bumper still needs more work, but is much better. The oil is changed to all motorcraft oil/filter. Both the outside mirrors are on now. Part of the engine chrome is polished. I need my dremel with the long arm thing to reach parts of it.

The PO is sending me the "dog dish" hubcaps. We forgot them.

Tomorrow (weather permitting) the master cylinder will get rebuilt. I will check over all the lights, points/condensor, rotor, plugs, etc. I think its all fine, it starts/runs well. I need to get a new air filter for it. This one is almost black.

A guy dad works with is checking on some parts for me. (correct tailgate, windshield wiper arm, correct sun visors, etc.) I hope to get some used tires on it soon and start driving it. :D

later,
Brian

Yes, those are "mud gripper tires" Sorry, I had to quote a dumb song. :o They are severely weather cracked though. All the tires are.

If you find out about the primer let me know. That could save me a ton of time, since there are only a few bad spots in the paint. I was thinking a lot of sanding (air long board and a DA) and either an activated primer or a sandable epoxy. I have most of the needed equipment (220 v MIG, 60 gallon compressor, and a devilbliss JGA paint gun), but the $$$ and time are the problem.

Sorry it took so long to get back about the primer. On his old truck he used a product made by Dupont called Rust Defender. On the can it says sprayable body filler. It will fill in up to 36 grit sandpaper scratches. On his he put on 2 heavy coats. After the first one flashes do second and wait 8 hours and then block sand. Temp. should be at least 60 deg. About $80 a quart.

Thanks rookie. I am getting different answers from different people. This is a new product to me. I will do my research. So far, I am reading about epoxy primer and etching primer for the first coats. Now I have one more.

With the weather change (its cold for AR!!!!!!!!), it will be a while before anything gets started.

Honestly, I am broke right now. Who isn't...right?

I am still lining up parts though. If the deals go through I will get a t-bird for a 5.0 SEFI (not H.O.)/AOD swap in the spring (trade for labor on trans rebuild). Its a whole running car, so I can strip what I want off of it. Then part out/scrap the rest.

I might be getting a B&M ratchet shifter from another guy (used-cheap). Another guy might have a set of headers if they are any good still (very cheap). I just swapped some old ch**y parts for a 9" rear (3.50 gears) and some other small items.

No money out of pocket yet, but hopefully I will get some parts before long. :)

Its annoying being broke. LOL

Hi guys,

I finally have the 56 all street legal. I took it for a drive tonight. :) :D Everything works. I am so excited!  :bounce:

Now I just have to get used to not having power steering or brakes.

thats the greatest feeling when you finish something you put a ton of work into and it actually works!!! good job

Hi again everyone,

No...I have not dissapeared. Just been really busy lately. I am teaching way too many hours this semester.

My big plans for the 56 have been put on hold temporarily. I was going to rip it apart and install a new drivetrain (modern anyway), new suspension, do the body work, and paint. Thats on hold.

I want to drive it to Knoxville, TN to the supernationals this summer.

There is a tour coming across AR.

I am trying to make it safe and reliable for the big event. I just put on some used goodyear tires and the stainless ford "baby moons" that came with it. I put in a new O'reilly auto battery. I (well...dad) rebuilt the Holly 2100 carb. I put in new sealed beam halogen headlights.

Next on the list is to remove a few leaves from the spring packs. Its a blast to drive, but rides like a 50 year old truck (even with new shocks).

EDIT: 3-1-06 It now has a tail-pipe. The spring poly pads are ordered. When they get here, I will remove a few leaves. New wiper arms/blades are ordered. Beauty rings are ordered. I have a clear inline fuel filter to put in.

I need to adjust the E-brake to hold a little better. I have put close to 500 miles on it now. Its a lot of fun. :D

Hmmm...problems, problems, problems. I have a serious coolant leak in the explorer which I have yet to find. The master cylinder on the 56 was bone dry today. None of the real parts for the 56 have made it here yet. Isn't life great?

The only things that made it here are the trim rings. Do they look ok?

I was thinking about this thread the other day when I saw a similar year model driving just off base here in MO. The truck looks great (beauty rings included)! It's nice to finally see someone who wants to save the beauty of a classic instead of just letting it waste away in their yard.

Thank you for the kind words. I hate to see any "classic" just sitting turning to a pile of rust. It will definately never be show truck or trailer queen. Henry built them as trucks..to be used as trucks. :)

I just need brakes! :D

Any updates Brian?

Thanks for asking. As far as the truck...no progress at all. It is completely on hold. It is just sitting there with no brakes waiting on me to get better.

I ended up having some serious health problems and almost didn't make it. I am now on dialysis and just trying to get my other health problems to stabilize for now.

It was a lot of fun to drive until the brakes went out. :D

Driving without brakes must have been interesting :p:

Damn, though, glad to hear doing ok now. Didn't know about the health problems. Keep fighting the good fight.

Actually, I was really fortunate. I had beeen running all over town in mid-day traffic that day. I left town sometime that afternoon and drove out to my parents house. Their house is on the highway, just over a hill. As I toppped the hill and pushed the brake pedal, it dropped top the floor. I simply geared it down to 2nd and turned in anyway.

Once I was off the highway, I shifted to 1st. Thats crawling speed in a 56. :p: No problem stopping when its barely moving anyway.

I have the parts to put a power booster under the floor. I just have not been able to work on it. In fact, I have a lot of parts to go on it.....someday.

nice 56 man my first truck was a 56 it was chopped and channeled 351c and a c6 oh i miss that truck a tree fell on her in a wind storm keep us posted on your progress!

Update, Brian?
