I just got back from a 9 hour round trip to pick up a replacement transmission.
The replacement has less than 10k miles on a rebuild. After it was done, the guy's wife wrecked the X. It came out of a 96 XLT Explorer with the 4.0...a direct replacement. He paid a little over $2k to have it done.
The transmission has been sitting outside, covered with tarp and plastic for the last 11 months. The input and output shafts are slightly rusted, but I'm pretty sure I can clean them up nicely.
I'm going to flush the fluid twice, and install a new filter, then get it installed next weekend.
Keep your fingers crossed...I may have only spent $100 on the transmission, but the drive cost me about $125 in gas, not counting the food stop we made.
