Some ship extenders by disassembling it and shipping it in vinyl wrapping. Lowe's and Home Depot sell the wrapping.
Shipping by bus is also an affordable option.

You might be able to just wrap it in layers of cardboard and lots of shrink wrap or tons of box tape. When I bought my first roof basket that's how it came and when I opened it there wasn't a scratch on it. The trick is to use a few layers of cardboard.

This is normally how large/bulky/irregular objects are sent via UPS/FedEx, etc. I'd bubble wrap it, then tape cardboard for support and buy a shrink wrap roller and mummify it.

Your other option would be to buy a wardrobe or golf club box, and maybe cut it to size and fill with packing peanuts. It probably wouldn't be as effective.
