I have a '98 Explorer with a 4.0 liter OHV engine.
Is there any other automatic transmissions
from earlier fords that will work with this vehicle
other than the 5R55E, like a C3 or C4? Just curious.

Thanks for the link. I got a lot of
useful info. The reason I asked is
because i'm having a time trying
to find a transmission for my
Explorer, and wanted to see if
there was any optional transmissions
to use as a substitute for the original.

Cannot for the life of me imagine going to a C-3! C-4 is good, but you are better off with the one you have, IMHO.

Happy Exploring

I'm thinking of every option. A friend of mine
may know where I might get an automatic
transmission from a 3.0 Ranger. Will my 4.0
bell housing bolt to the 3.0 transmission?

need to know also

I also need to know if the Aerostar 3.0 tranny will bolt to my X's 4WD tailshaft housing and bell housing.

aerostar- 3.0

yes i know this thread is old, but i found this guy's question when doing a search

The Aerostar and the Ranger and the Explorer share the same trannies. The 2WD version just uses a different tailshaft housing with a seal. I do not know if the 2WD version used a different output shaft or not. If it did that would be a major impediment to a swap. Otherwise all you need consider is years and whether you are dealing with an A4LD or a 4R/5R.... swapping up or down between these trannies will present computer issues.
