i have a ranger 4.0 v6 stander 5 speed trans

hi i have a 1991 ford ranger with a 4.0 stander 5 speed and the trans is bad so if i buy a used one dose it have to be off a 4.0 v6 ?or will others fit my 4.o L. v6 ? thanks.
