Hi I have managed to lose only key to my 96 explorer, I need to locate the key no so ford dealer can make new key. I have seen post for keyless entry is this for the key no or for immobiliser? If the latter where can I find key number ? ( Have no service book)

The dealer should be able to look it up by VIN iirc

Hi ford dealer say they can make new key but need vehicle to do so. As auto would need to go on back of flat load but can't remove steering lock without key

No. Spoke to various locksmiths and none seem to know or they quote silly money. If I can find the key number a new one can be made.

The key number is usually a metal keytag kind of thing with the manuals.

At least your truck isn't new enough to have PATS- because THAT would be silly money... :)

Curious- what's the amount of silly money the locksmiths want?

WOW!...

I have seen a locksmith cut a new key from a blank, by hand....standing outside the vehicle, in about 20 min....and it was on a Ford....so it CAN be done....and cheaply. In your driveway. This happened about 15 years go....and it cost the guy $75USD

I removed my door lock and took just the lock to a locksmith and had a new key cut for 25USD.You could try that.
