I need advice on converting to an electric fan on my 5.0L.

i want to convert to electric fan on my 97 explorer 5.0 . im looking for some good info and a quick parts list. and how difficult it maybe...thanks for any help

Yeah, the ford fans move alot of air. Your main concern is space. The big single fans(mark VII, taurus) have to have their shrouds depth trimmed down to clear the water pump stud because the fan motor is lined up with it. A lot of guys have used dual fans out of a ford contour. They move about 3500-4000 cfm which when coupled with a good controller is more than enough for your V8. I am using the contour fan in my V6 because I have the original dual core radiator and the dual fans end up above and below the water pump stud. There are also guys who use after market fans(flexalite, spal, blackmagic, etc). It's really personal preference and how much you want to spend. those after market fans can get pricey. The other expense is the controller. There are a few to chose from here as well. The major players are Delta Current Control, Spal, and Painless Wiring Products. Again it comes down to what features you want and also price. My personal preference is the ford fans. They're durable, plentiful and cheap. Got mine from the u-pull it for $15. My buddy got his for $20. Do you research, ask questions here on the forum. There's a bunch of guys running e fans. Search electric fan conversion and you'll come up with a ton of info. Another Fan you may be able to use is the Chevy HHR. It pulls enough CFM to cool a 460 BB but is much thinner than the Mark VIII.

I forgot about the HHR fan. I see some guys are using them now. Are they readily available? I might have a hard time puttin a chevy fan in my ford though. haha

They are actually inexpensive new.. I've been seeing them for around $60 or so.. And chevy parts aren't that bad.. Just use the good parts from any manufacturer.

I have a chevy 700r4 trans and a Geo Prism/Toyota corolla fan on one of the trans coolers, and I'm sure there are other non ford things on our X by now too..

Find one that's really thin, when I did my water pump with the fan off it measured at 3.25" inches from the radiator. Not hardly any room at all in the V8's I wanted the Black magic Flex-a-lite fan and pulls plenty of CFM but is a hair to thick needs like 4 3/16" to clear.

Ditto, the 302 requires a much thinner fan. The Taurus and Mark VIII motors are too long.

The Flex-lite 188 or 185 fits barely, CobraXP(?) put one in. I have that here to do some day soon.

I feel like the spokesman for the dual Ford fans, but the Contour/Mystique fans are a very good fit when you have clearance issues. They require no trimming, and since the fans are off set there is no clearance issues with the water pump. In between the motors the shroud is only about 2" deep. I have the original thick dual core radiator and the Taurus fan wouldn't fit without a lot of trimming, and that's on the SOHC engine. I've got probably 3" between the fan and water pump with the dual fan.
