I installed the d35 pumpkin with a locker i bought 6 months ago today. The problem is the axles and pumpkin under my 93 sport are dana 28. Anyone ever heard of this? They wont work with the front pig i just installed. the spline count is incorrect. long story short, i need both d35 axle assemblies hub to pumpkin. All you sas guys, maybe you have some laying around?

thanks

Thats odd that it has the d28 assembly, only thing i can think is someone, replaced it with a ranger assembly, belieivng them to be the same... Are you the original owner?

Only thing ive ever heard with a d28 being on an Explorer, is like maybe some of the VERY first ever off the production line, and still that is rumor i tihnk. Ive never seen proof. That sure is wierd though.

can it be the d28 assembly inside of the d35 pumpkin? or is it a d35 but the different years had different spline counts? my truck is a 93 sport 4x4 and the pumpkin came from a 91 4door 4x4. Its more of a curiosity now than anything. in the end i need axle shafts. anyone have them?

I have heard of the "hybrid" D28-D35 combo. I took this from http://www.therangerstation.com/4wd_Front_Axles.html
There are some Dana35/Dana28 hybrids known to be in "some" of the "Non 4.0" Ranger trucks. Although some say that if the truck has a 7.5" rear axle, then it will have the Dana 35 with 28 guts. This is NOT TRUE. I have seen a `91, 2.9 Ranger with a 7.5" rear axle, that had the "real" Dana 35. The picture above, of the D35/28 is from a `95, so at this point, I really cant tell you what, will have what.

The easiest way to check to see if your D35, has 28 "Guts", is to pull the plug out from the front. If you can see the main cap, you have the 28 guts. (Sorry!). If you can see the end of the carrier, you have "The Real Thing". If you click on the photos above, you will see a red dot, on the photo that opens. This marks the location of what you will see through the "Plug".

I was always of the impression that the hybrid axle was never put in an Explorer, but it just could be possible.

WOW, Thanks for the info. I will be going back to the truck in the morning and measuring the shafts to see what i relly have now that i got some info to go on.

-thanks a million

figured it out. The axle splines were worn out/stripped. replaced the axles with one from a junkyard and it worked fine. it was the dana35 after all. thanks for your help.
