I have a 1995 Explorer XLT with Premium Sound w/ CD DJ and need info on hu installation.

I recently purchased a Blaupunkt San Jose MP3/CD Receiver. I have no intention in uprading stock speakers and I won't be using the factory amp.

Is there a way to install it without any harnesses? How do you remove the factory hu? Do I need an adapter to allow the single-DIN to fit? How do I bypass the amp? Detailed instructions would greatly be appreciated, as I am clueless when it comes to these things.

I don't know how to remove the hu in a '95, you might wanna pick up a haynes manual, it tells you how to take it out...

You don't have to use harnesses. You can just get back there and connect all the wires via cutting them and splicing them. You can either put splice endings on 'em or just electrical tape 'em together. I have electrical tape and it works just fine. I believe you do have to have a kit for the single-din to fit, but you can buy it for 20 bucks at best buy, circuit city, etc... You need a amp bypass kit, however it does require harnesses. I've heard the best place to buy one is cruthfield, it comes with detailed instructions.

Hope this helps. In case you have any other questions, you might want to check out the "search" feature at the top of the page, you can usually find answeres to questions like these...

Here's what I had to do...

What's up Austin... First question: Do you have the NEW BODY style Explorer or the older style? If it's newer, follow below.

I have a '96 Eddie Baeur w/ Premium Sound and if it's anything like mine, you'll have a fun time figuring it all out in your head how it works, but here's how mine is put together:

Headunit:
Square Black Plug with 8-Wires being used with 16-Hole Locations in it + a Long Grey Rectangular Plug with 7-Wires being used with 8-Hole Locations in it.

Here's the fun part, I DO NOT RECOMMEND CUTTING WIRES where the stock radio harness was at, because sometime down the road you might want to hook things back up the way they were (I know I do someday). However, on the above 2-Plugs I was talking about (Square Black and Rectangular Grey), you'll only actually need to run a Harness from this Grey connector to some wires of your aftermarket radio.

Speakers:
You mentioned you have the PREMIUM SOUND SYSTEM in your Expl. If this is so, like it is on mine, you have a Sub in the rear-right panel with 2-amps as well (one for sub + one for speakers). The amp on the LEFT side of that panel is the one for the speakers (all 4 of them). On the left side of that amp, there should be 3-plugs: 2 that are right next to each other and one that has about 13-holes in it with 8-wires across the bottom of the plug. Those 8-wires are your SPEAKERS! (it took me the damn longest time to figure that out through research with Ford). You'll need another Harness to PLUG into that BLACK 13-Pin Plug and run it up to the aftermarket Radio. Now, on the harness that was supplied with your aftermarket radio, you'll need to make the necessary connections (I used butt-connectors) to hook everything up (from the Rectangular Grey Connector which supplies 12V Switched Power, 12V Constant (Memory) Power, Illumination/Dimmer, etc. (I have all the paper-work on my stereo as in which wires go to what function, as long as you have the same system I have).

In-Dash Harness:
Yes, you will need an in dash harness for your Single-DIN sized aftermarket Radio (probably the one with a pocket).

I hope this helps you out... and if u need more detailed instructions I can provide them since I did EVERY last detail myself on my Expl. :)

Talk with u later...

-Mike

opinion:

i have a 95 XLT, so let me just explain a few quick things. if you still have the factory HU in there you are gonna need the ford removeal keys to get it out.
yes you will need a install kit(20$), and yes (if you wanted to save yourself about 2 hours worth of work) go and buy the wiring harness for the P soundsystem, in the factory explorers.(also about $20). i also recomend crutchfield, unless you have a reputable shop in your town. i do not see to much in bestbuy or circuit city.....go somewhere who sells METRA brand assoc.

then you will be able to install your head unit, all right there at the dash and it should only take 45 minutes tops!

Buy a Metra install kit at Circuit City $16, then go to WalMart buy the removal tools for $3 and a wiring kit adapter for $8. By far the cheapest way to go.

UMMM... ACTUALLY I WOULD TAKE IT SOMEWHERE TO GET IT DONE... YOU DONE WANT TO MESS ANY THING UP... IF YOU GO TO SOME PLACE IM SURE THEY'LL DO A GREAT JOB, JUST A SUGGESTION.....

First off if you want good sound don't do a half ass job. Get the wiring harness and get the dash kit. If you don't get the dash there will be a nice hole above the deck and it will look real stupid. If you want to remove the deck you will need a tool. If you buy a dash kit you should get the tool. If you call up crutchfield telling them what you have and what you need they will give you everything you need. If you still are interested in doing a half a$$ job you can take a metal coat hanger and make two separate U's out of it. With the space between the gap the same size as the two holes that are located on the sides of the stock deck. Push them in the holes and the deck will come out.

If you don't feel like going through this it should cost you about $40 to get installed. Also I don't know where you bought it from but most places that you buy from unless mail order will install it for free.
