I have a 1997 Ford Explorer V8 5.0 with 81,000 miles on it. I drove this morning and every thing seemed to be fine. but when i got back into the car i noticed it started to shake while it was stopping. As i was driving it I could smell burning substance coming from the car and the check engine light started to flash. Can any one help me out with this problem?:(

A flashing check engine light and 'the shake' indicate a cylinder not firing. That smell is a cat converter getting really hot from the unburned gas going into it (from the cylinder that's not firing). A code reader (or a trip to a car-parts store) will give a code indicating which cylinder is acting up.

A V8 will still run and accelerate OK with a dead cylinder, but running it like that is tough on the engine and the cats. It''s best to get it fixed promptly.
