i own a 97 sport 4x4 i just had a new trans put in as well as a new transfer case because the old 1 was done for and yet the 4 wheel drive doesnt work ?!?!? it will shift into 4low so the shift motor is working. my questions are as follows.
1. do the auto front hubs have the plastic (actuator)pieces that break in them? could that be the problem?
2. if i replace the front hub/wheel bearings will that help?

ANY HELP OR ADVICE IS APPRECIATED THANKS IN ADVANCE

I don't think the troubleshooting is going to cover this one...

1) You have no hubs. You have a live front axle. It's solidly splined to the front driveshaft at all times.
2) It'll make no difference.

If the shift from high range to low range is working, and I'm assuming your lights are coming on, it's likely an issue with the transfer case wiring. Assuming the transfer case is a known-good unit (or a factory rebuild) I would suspect an electrical gramlin. The place I would start is the wiring for the Torque On Demand Relay (aka the infamous 'brown wire').

Grab yourself a multimeter with a good sharp probe on it. (NOT a 12V test light) Flip the switch to 4high with the key on, vehicle in park, and probe the brown wire where it enters the transfer case. If you have 12V there, the transfer case is no good. If you do not have 12V there, we have to do some more checking further up-stream.

Start there and let us know what you find...
