Okay about a month ago I was doing some off roading nothing too harsh just driving. I put it into "low range"
and continued on my way. Later I heard and definatly felt a huge clunk from underneath thinking it was just something in the road I went on. I came across a large mud puddle I sped up and tried to go staight through, but no I got stuck, after trying time and time again to get out I gave up. (Now remember its still in low and in drive). I got out of the car and noticed that only the rear tires where spinning, I put the car in reverse, and again I heard and felt this clunk, but as soon as I gave it gas
in reverse there was this and constant whining/Grinding coming from somewhere. Now after calling a friend to come get me out, everytime I back the car out of the garage and put it into drive it makes that whiining/grinding for a while and stops after that huge clunk does its thing. If any one can understand what Im saying help would be handy, Just to let you know I know nothing about Trannys. thanks

It sounds to me like your hubs are going bad and the noise you are hearing is one of them not disengaging fully, then it rubs on the shaft and re-engages itself (after it makes that clunk noise stop the truck, get out and see if you can rotate the drive shafts or axles -- if not then the hubs are locked).

One way I found to help is to (on gravel, etc.) put the truck in 4wd, drive backwards about 10 feet (still in 4wd), stop, go back to 2wd, then drive forward. On my truck this would prevent the hubs from locking up (the forward motion would have a tendency to further disengage the hub, rather than engage it).

The next step is to replace the hubs, preferably with manual ones (you know if they're locked or not, and they're much stronger!)
