Went to pick up a parts washer, got it loaded, turned the key, no turn no start, dash lights and door dinger work. i know the new battery works and I have had no issues. So I get out my jump box to jump it. No turn no start. We start checking fuses, relays and connections and were about to give up when it started. None of us know
what made it start. I asked the guy that was messing around behind the front passenger side wheel what he did he said he did not know.

Went home shut it of, tried to start same thing. Next morning fired right up, shut it off tried to start, no turn no start. Spent all day Sunday checking for loose connections in the rain. Monday fired right up shut it off tried to start no turn no start.

My brother said there was a part in passenger side fire wall that the plus from battery goes to and that goes to the starter and that a small brown wire was probably lose on it. I could not find anything there, but could not see past the windshield washer and radiator tanks and AC parts, could not see any thing from the bottom up either.

The battery is new and I have had no trouble with starting since installing it 2 months ago. Any advice??

I believe that your brother is thinking of the starter relay. In your '99 it's located at position 6 inside the power distribution box - a fairly large, black box next to the brake booster. The wire going from there to the starter is Yellow/Light Blue. Another reason (not the only one) for the starter not receiving power could be the DTR ("neutral switch") on the transmission.

The starter solenoid is directly attached to the starter, and the starter/solenoid is sold as one unit.

Good luck with your repair.

I COPIED THIS AT THE ECONOFIX WEBSITE. I THINK MY BROTHER WAS TALKING ABOUT THE SOLENOID AND I DID NOT SEE ONE ON TOP OF THE STARTER YET WHEN I WAS PRICING STARTERS THE PARTS STORES ALL HAD THEM ON STARTER EXCEPT WALMART.COM IT HAD ONE LIKE MINE AND WAS HALF THE PRICE OF THE PARTS STORES. I KNOW FROM PAST EXPERIENCE PART STORES MAKE MISTAKES ON STARTERS AND SOME VEHICLES ARE ODD.

ALL I REALLY KNOW IS I HAVE NOT LOCATED THE SOURCE OF MY PROBLEM AS OF YET AND I AM ABLE TO START IT ONCE A DAY. TODAY THE CHARGE GAUGE HAD A SLIGHT BOUNCE TO IT AND IT NEVER MOVES SO I EITHER HAVE A LOOSE CONNECTION I HAVE A CHEAP NEGATIVE CONNECTOR AND IT IS HARD TO GET TIGHT BUT I COULD NOT MOVE IT WHEN I CHECKED OR MAYBE VOLTAGE REGULATOR GOING OUT. THERE ARE ALSO WIRES GOING FROM THE POWER DISTRIBUTION BOX THAT ARE NOT FACTORY WIRES BOTH GO UNDER THE POWER ASSIST BELOW THE FIREWALL AND I DO NOT WHERE THEY GO AFTER THAT.
GOT MY GOOD JACK SO HOPE IT DOESN'T RAIN TOMORROW (IT IS NOW) SO I CAN GET UNDER IT BETTER (NOT LOOKING GOOD). AND CHECK CONNECTIONS ON THE STARTER. THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE!!

SPECIAL NOTE: FORD STARTERS
Many Fords use an external starter solenoid, mounted on the fender or firewall. In a "dead silence on key turn" no-start situation, this solenoid could be bad.
A bad chassis ground at the battery can make a Ford solenoid not operate, so make sure a Ford solenoid has a good ground as well as 12 volts from the key switch to the "s" terminal. Many Ford type solenoids get their ground through the bolts which hold them to the vehicle body, so when replacing a solenoid, make sure the bolts are clean and tight, and making a good ground.

Another way Ford starter solenoids fail
Sometimes a Ford solenoid will "weld it's contacts together" . In this case the starter will keep turning the engine over even after you have released the ignition switch from the "start" position. Sometimes the only way to stop it is to remove one of the battery terminals!
I've had cheap brands of solenoids do this out nof the box, so make sure to get a name brand solenoid when replacing one. Also make sure the ground is good where the solenoid bolts down: free of rust and bolted down tightly.
On some cars the solenoid is on the starter. Others (Fords, mostly) have an external solenoid , usually on the fender or radiator core support. On all cars the starter solenoid is at the other end of the large positive battery cable.

i SAW A DIAGRAM SOME WHERE THAT THE DTR IS LOCATED IN THE STEERING COULOMB FOR AUTO TRANNY AND I HAVE THOUGHT OF THAT. NOT CHECKED YET. PRAYING THE RAIN STOPS SO I CAN FIX THE DANG WIRE IN THE DOOR FOR POWER WINDOWS (AGAIN), POSSIBLE IT IS ARCING ON A BARE SPOT IN THE HARNESS CAUSING WEIRD BEHAVIOR THANKS FOR THE POST!!.

Good luck and keep us posted. Would appreciate if you turned OFF your caps lock, we can read without the yelling. TIA

Check the battery cables for corrosion at the terminals etc. It sounds like either a bad starter(solenoid is part of it), or a bad connection of the power cables. That includes the small trigger wire coming from the PDB, as referenced above. Any poor connection of any of the wires can cause the engine to not start one time, but does other times. I'd begin with a battery terminal cleaning tool, and R&R the battery cable ends from the battery. Regards,
