First off, I just had transmission work done, TWICE. Once for drive, they replaced my transmission with a rebuilt one, and about 2 weeks later my truck wouldn't go into reverse. They "fixed" it, yet again. Now it's been a little while, and my truck won't go into reverse AGAIN. When this first started happening, my truck would be in park, and it wouldn't exceed 3000 rpm. Otherwise it would kick into reverse. Now this problem is permanent. I'm taking my truck in tomorrow morning to get "fixed" again. Hopefully for good this time. Is there anything that could make my reverse go out?
SECOND problem. I have serious loss of power. I have a new alternator, spark plugs, and the lines that connect from the coil pack to the engine (excuse me for not knowing the correct name of them). I had my fuel filter replaced, air filter, AND I just got an oil change. This truck has been nothing but a guessing game for me. To start my car, I have to keep my foot on the gas petal just to keep it running. If I don't, my truck will stall. I have to keep my foot on it for about 5-7 minutes, and then it runs by itself, BUT it's idling really low. When it DOES idle, it's really rough. PLEASE someone help me. I don't want to get rid of my explorer, but if I can't figure this out, I'll have to.

....first welcome here...it sounds like you've got a bunch of things going on...we have a couple great tranny guys on here...as for number 2, i am not so sure your tranny doesn't have something to do with that either...be patient on here as they will jump in to help but everyone is busy on home stuff on sundays....in the mean time, do a thorough inspection of your vacuum lines so that can be ruled out...good luck and again, welcome here...:D

Welcome to this forum! The second problem sounds like the IAC valve or possibly the fuel pressure regulator. The first problem might be valve body related. Do you still have manual 1st when reverse goes out? Sometimes they don't bother to rebuild the valve body when they do a rebuild. Read the sticky called the A4LD valve body rebuild diary in the transmission section. It is written by Glacier991.

Welcome to Explorer Forum!

On all Ford Explorer's the #A4LD where maufactured in Franch and very "sloply" so, the valve boodies where loose thats why they shift slow, the componants were ill fitted and Ford did not catch this for a number of years, that's why thy call the Ford Explorer 'exploders'. Now I just had the same problem with mine but I made sure I got a "REMANUFACTURED" transmission up OEM new spec. , when you get a "REBUILB" transmission all you get is just a bunch of clutch pack and new seals but if the original transmission is junk like the #A4LD is well all you end up is "JUNK" transmission with brand new clutch packs. With a "REMANUFACTURED" transmission the company tears the the entire unit "test" every component, upgrades to new 'OEM' specifications, new valve bodies etc. and usaully 'Dyno test' the unit and offer 75,000 to 3 year its like a brand new transmission.
I learned this from a Ford dealer Transmission expert and I do not know why Ford Motor CO. did not have a recall on the #A4LD
But if you GOOGLE: "REMANUFACTURED #A4LD TRANSMISSIONS PHEONIX ARIZONA" you will find several wharehouse where ther build these by the 100's: for a FORD A4LD you can purchase one from $519.00 to $695.00 & S/H and these are the remanufactured transmissions and not those garbare junk REBUILT clutch pack. and thats why your having so much problems.

I concur with Brooklyn's assessment of the situation.

I have found an A4LD recently that had the reverse servo spring left out in the "rebuild". was causing the customer problems. I installed a spring and servo seals and it started going into reverse like it was supposed to.

I thought that the tranny should shift into reverse with or without the spring*, so I suppose the new seals might have been the cure.

*my reason for thinking this is that the 5R55E trannys don't have a spring in the servo....
