- 1999 Montaineer
Well, our 1999 Montaineer V8 has been losing coolant very slowly. So I noticed some antifreeze leaking at the front of the intake manifold. Pulled the upper plenum and went to first re-torque the intake manifold bolts. The driver's side front bolt wouldn't turn. I soaked it with various penetrating oils. Then tried to remove the bolt (the front ones are a stud with a nut on the shaft - different than the others). Anyway I broke off the bolt in the head! Now I am obligated to tear it down. Well, bad news - the front passenger side bolt was stuck to. I heated it, soaked it, hammered on it, and turned it and thought it came loose but it too broke off. I removed the intake manifold and drilled a pilot hole to use an easy-out on one side first. The broken bolt won't move. Dang, I can't imagine having to remove the heads and taking them somewhere to see if someone can remove the broken bolts. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm just feeling awful. It was supposed to be a simple re-torque. I wanted to use some bars-leak stop but thought that was a tacky way to fix the leak. Now our vehicle is down. With 77K miles I hate to junk it but it may have to become a clunker trade if I cannot get the broken bolts out. I could certainly use some advice. Thanks thanks and thanks.
