I was trying to bleed my clutch on 99 ranger. Didn't think I tightened valve too hard but it came off. Now there is just a little tube I can feel and can't see how to put valve back...if it's even possible. By valve, i mean the piece covered in rubber holding bleeder screw. I was hoping it would just screw back onto the little tube but i dont see any threads. Loosened the bleeder screw nut and tried cranking assembly back on but no good, must have been attached to slave with a weld joint or something. I hope someone understands what im talking about. almost had a good day today, now I'm a sad panda. Please let me know if I am screwed or just missing something. I am a newbie to say the least.

How do I post pictures? Need to use external sites or something?

Sounds like you snapped it off, but without seeing it, can't really say.
Did you get it bled good enough to drive?

Welcome.

It bled but now it's an open valve so it won't build pressure so I don't know if I can even get to the transmission shop to replace slave. I would do it myself but from what I gather, replacing the slave in a 99 ranger is not the easiest diy. As far as snapping it off. It looks like the slave has a solid 2 or 3 inches tube with the bleeder screw at the end and no other screws, nuts or fitting apart from a nut to tighten bleeder screw. Well, half of the assembly is in my hand so I am guessing it did snap. The piece covered with rubber came off anyways which seems like it was part of one solid tube going to the slave....unless that piece can reattach somehow. Thanks for the reply, I will check out picture posting info and post

Yeah, I guess if you snap that off, the clutch loses all pressure.
To replace the slave, you have to drop the transmission.. It's not easy, but it's not complicated either. Costly to have someone else do it.
There's good info here on DIY, if you end up going that route.
I did mine, and I'm no mechanic, I just couldn't afford to have it done at a shop.
Here's a pick of the slave.

So based on the diagrams I've seen of a slave cylinder and the pictures I posted, I think I need a new slave? Really sucks; wouldn't be a big deal on many vehicles, but I know what it means for labor on the ranger. I always crank things down too tight. I wanted to make sure that I got the valve closed tight and didn't realize it was such a fragile POS. :( Worst part is I don't even know if the slave was my problem...obviously is now, but for all I know the master, or pressure plate or bearing are all bad too, or there's a leak in the line. I felt like the pressure in the pedal was getting good prior to my 8th time bleeding it when the valve broke off, but hard to say how it was going to shift when I finished or if the problem would start again in a week. Sucks when you create new issues and don't get to finish the ones you were troubleshooting. Now, I can either spend an entire day or two replacing the slave, or spend even more on parts and time and just do everything I guess. Hmmm...Really don't have the time for this, but would be a good learning experience I guess

The most common issue by far with the Explorer/Ranger manual transmissions is the slave failing, so odds are that was your problem anyway.
Yes you'll need a new one.i suggest running some searches here and reading up on dropping the trans, and replacing the slave.
Read about parts store slaves vs ford dealer slaves too, and then make your decision on which you'll buy.
It's recommended to do the whole clutch while you're in there, unless you have a near new clutch already.

By whole clutch you mean pressure plate, bearing, flywheel? I would rather not spend more than I have to but I will take a look while it's off. Any thoughts on what kind of slave to get? I've heard the ones from O'Reilly are crap

Flywheel can usually get by with just resurfacing, but clutch disc, pressure plate, pilot bearing and slave, yes. I get not wanting to spend money, , you could just do the slave and be fine, just check everything. The pilot bearing tends to disintegrate, and they're pretty cheap, I'd do that at least. Try to find a Timken brand one.
Based on reading posts here for years, parts store slaves tend to crap out fast, maybe 50% go bad in 6 months or a year. A ford slave is the best bet in longevity. It may cost 4 or 5 times as much, so you have to calculate that vs dropping the trans again, and make your decision. ;)

Wow, 6 months to a year is insanity considering ford is probably original so went 17 years until I got ahold of it. Sucks because I am already in this truck more than I wanted to be financially. I just hope the engine doesn't crap out if I fix all this crap

Which engine yours have? The ohv 4.0 will last a good long time...

3.0. I just watched video on doing clutch and I think I would be in over my head. Wondering if I can just seal off bleeder valve and sucks bubbles from reservoir. Might as well try since slave is screwed anyways. I wonder what would seal off that metal valve line
