I hate my shocks!!! A couple of months ago I was told I needed to change my shocks (my first mistake). So I went to Autozone and asked which were most like the ones I would get from the factory (second mistake). So then I get some Gabriels for around $30 a piece. And now I hate to drive on a bumpy road.
I'm going to change them but to what?? I'm scared now!!! If only yall could ride in my X.....you would know what I mean.
I don't go off-road much except on a few "sight-seeing" trails (my 89 Olds Cutlass Calias felt better on those trails than my X now). So I need something that feels awesome and smooth on the road and better on trails. Also I need something less expensive than $69 a pop.
I'm looking at Rancho RS5000 ($32.74 each on truckperformance.com).
Help Please! Thanks

I think they were $49 each at Autozone.

I also have the Monroe Relex and I would recomeend them also for the street. Just my opinion.

I have a 92 XLT 4x4 V6, and I recently switched out the factory shocks with Rancho 5000. Some say their overdamped, but I love them. They ran me about 40 bucks each through Summit Racing.

what exactly does overdamped mean?? how would it feel?

I just put Gabriels Pro Ryder VST's on yesterday and what a difference. I love them. So much better than stock...eliminated nose dive, and body roll extremely.

I liked my Gabriels for 6 months, lived with them for another year, and then replaced them with Bilsteins. The bad thing is that although they left my vehicle uncontrollable on any type other than smooth, Auto Discount Parts wouldn't take them back, and I live in Mississippi where we have some of the worst roads. Currently, mine are sitting outside behind my apartment.

I too have the Monroe Reflex shocks. Switching them out from the stock shocks was like night and day. I don't know what kind of ride you are expecting out of the Explorer, but remember that it is a truck, not a car. It will ride stiffer than a car. Something to get used to with the new shocks.

The Monroes, Gabriel VST, and Edelbrock shocks are all based on the same technology with the variable valving,. I went with the Monroes because they seem to be a bit more solidly built than the Gabriels. They were $40 a piece and I got them when it was buy three get the fourth free.

I think you will be happy with these or something based on this technology as they are an all around good shock. (No I am not an employee for Monroe)

I just finished putting the lift on my truck and when I put the Gabriel Pro Ryder VST's on VS. the stock shock's I was very impressed, I ran the truck for a week with the stock shock's and it was a meat wagon... but after the GPR VST's whooa, it's a new truck.. and I can thank Gerald and many other members for recomending these shock's..
