I'd like to see a Gen 2 SAS in reverse. That is to say, I would like to see someone fab. a IS in the rear. Move the gas tank where the spare tire is. Put the spare on the roof and put a Independent Suspention in the rear. That would be killer. That and make it level, with a 2" TT up front (with Ex Sport Trac Torsion bars or what ever the stiffest are) and make the back level with it. I think that is what Ford should have done in the first place and have them come out with them with 33"s from the factory. Full FWIS. But, hey, I don't think they will ever hire me as an engineer at Ford.

That thing would royally suck off road...the rear axle having some droop is the only thing saving us right now..well that and lockers.

Easiest way to do this mod:

Sell your Explorer and buy a 2002 4 Door

Actually

I still need the off road version of an explorer
OUCH owned.
My parents have a 2002. Too low to the ground. I mean. the body wraps around the tire. I just can't consider a vehicle a truck or SUV if the body line goes below the center cap. Maybe that is harsh but I can't buy a Gen 3, too low, too big, too bulky, not enough power in the V6 (same V6 but add oh I dunno 1,200 lbs.)

Sorry Heath

I didn't mean to put it here. I am guessing this too is the FOR SALE one. I didn't mean to upset you.

Honestly Alec

I parked beside a Gen 3 Ex today. I know the pumkin is up higer in the Gen 3 than mine is but, the lower control arms are far lower than my leaf springs (the lowest outside point on my back axle)

I didn't think it was possible, but that idea could be more stupid than this:

:p;)

hrm that's the most bass ackwards of lifting a vehicle, there is a reason people rip out indepentant suspension, it's worthless offroad. I'm not sure why you would want to put independant suspension in the rear to lift a vehicle any way... what possible practical thing does that serve???

What rifle, I don't need a rifle to take care of multiple thread by the same person in the wrong forum... Who needs a rifle... I have a delete button!!!

heh, i can't believe i missed that... I dunno what you've seen but i havent seen many idenpendent suspension rigs "own" a solid axle rig offroad. I'd love to see what you think makes IS far superior.

GA Southern

If Independent suspention is SO worthless off road, why does the Humvee (the military one not the worthless Hummer or even worse the H2) but, the Military Hum Vee that can do circles in the mud around my Ex, Why does it have Four Wheel Independent Suspention and a lot more ground clearance than my Ex????

You could fab up an IFS with double A-arms and coilovers like the hardcore competition crawlers. But for all but hardcore comp crawlers, solid rear is the way to go offroad.

Nic,

You can do anything and make it functional as long as you have the money and shop resources. However, most of us are thinking within the confines of reasonable projects.

Hummers make do with IFS and IRS because they are triple locked so it doesn't matter as much if a tire is in the air. Also their indi suspension systems are very different from those on other vehicles.

That being said, they still don't flex that well and can get out 'wheeled by built solid rigs.

I kinda

I kinda like the way they can go through some pretty deep ruts. That is my application. I want to keep the thing "on road" by Nicaraguan standards for the most part but you got to understand these roads can be pretty dainged washed out in the rainy season. Its not anything a reasonably lifted and modified ex can't handle. I wouldn't forget a winch for just in case. I like my ABS brakes. I have had them save me from a few accidents in a few vehicles I have had before (my ranger and my first Ex). I could tell a HUGE difference when the fuse blew one time in my Ranger and when I had a few problems with the ABS in my first Ex. MAN those brakes were AWESOME. That was the first time I ever owned 4 wheel ABS. these on the current Ex are good but not as impressive as my 1st Gen Ex. Anyways, as it turns out my ABS problems were worn rear bakes. changed them and they never gave me any problems after that.
