So I've been thinking about buying another 2nd gen. This one would be used as a daily driver but also as a mild 4wheeler. Basically my wife doesn't like to spend all day 4wheeling like I do. The idea would be to plan a camping spot for the family that could be accessed by this new 2nd gen but would still be a fairly easy trail.

I have an Escape and Mariner, but when loaded up and in the high elevations of the Rocky Mtns, that 3.0L V6 with no low range can only do so much. Plus the alternators are mounted fairly low- fine for street driving but not for stream crossing. Many have reported alternator failure soon after deep water forging.

So I've been thinking, what's your ultimate 2nd gen set up?

I think mine is:
1998 or newer
5.0L motor and 4 speed auto
Manual transfer case to get low range
Coilovers up front
RLC bumpers front and back (I like my custom bumpers on my '97, but they ain't cheap!)
32x10.5 all terrain tires
Rear lifted with F-150 spring pack
U-bolt mount skid plates
4.10 gears
LSD in rear
Double DIN HU with video screen and backup camera
I can't decide on leather vs cloth seats. Cloth seems to fair better over time, but leather is more comfortable
