I have a 2002 explorer V6, the service engine light was on and would flash periodically and i had a shake when idling, I changed out the coil pack and that made the service engine light go off and the shake went away for a couple days.

The service engine light came back on with the periodic flashing and i the idle shake returned. Then the other day I was drving (about 70 mph) and the car suddenly throttled down and slowed to 55 then continued to decrease in speed to about 20 mph. Then no matter how had i hit the gas it won't go past 15-20 mph. When i am in park or nuetral and try to rev the engine it revs to aout 2300 rpms and stops.

I havent changed the spark plugs in a while i am hoping its that simple but fear it may not be. Any one know what else it could be?????

im not sure if its a drive by wire, but if so, then you may want to check the throttle valve system to make sure its opening completely when you hit the gas.

The other thing i would try is to pull the battery cables and reset the system. See if that stops the problem - if it retruns, obviously take it to the shop.

****Update****

New spark plugs and wires got rid of the idle shake and the service engine light. (It actually made a HUGE difference)

But when i hit the gas it still wont rev past 2000 rpms. I will check the throttle valve system. Also i noticed a rattle that comes from under the middle of the car. Any thoughts on what that could be and would it be related to the problem?

****FIXED****

Ended up being the catylitic converter< go figure. . .runs like a charm now
