ignition control module quest ??

ive got a substitute ignition control module in but noticing right next to it is what appears to be another octane resistor ?? what does it do ???

It's called the "spout" connector and is used to check initial mechanical timing.

When disconnected (unplugged) it prevents any electronic timing changes so a timing light can be used to check mechanical timing.

IIRC or something like that. .. .. .
 






^^ Bingo. It's kind of a left-over of the previous-generation Cologne engines. Right before the Explorer came out, they were distributor powered, not DIS. That connector was removed to remove computer control of ignition timing so you could verify it.

There's actually 2 of them on the Explorer. There's one up by the ICM and another further back towards the firewall, by the EEC-IV connector. I'm pretty sure the one by the firewall is the one that allows computer control of timing (Octane Shorting Bar). I think the one up front is the one that controls spark (SPOUT).
 






thanks guys sounds right to me been looking for timing issues bought to replace my timing chain and gears ill see if i can find out more on how to hook up the timing light reading something about how to do that hear but dont remember SPOUT
