ignition fuse blown

i love my explorer and my ranger,cry i hit a tree today brakes failed... dont know why.. But the main issue is my baby. She has blown an ignition Fuse. a 60 amp fuse. i do most of my own car repair. the last thing i messed with was the fuel system. gauge. pump<did not replace pump> lines filters. well i had it towed to a friends shop. they pulled relays upon relays but found nothing wrong. did the code reader found no codes. told me it had to be the wiring. i found a bare spot in the ignition wiring that goes form switch to wire harness. covered it. repllaced fuse. bingo it worked. that was 4 months ago. well it did it again. blew 2 fuses afer pulling the switch wires again. saw nothing amiss. but once i replaced the fuse a 3rd time. it only heats it up. i have yet to get it back home to test relays again. can you offer some more insight? please help me ... i am a paramedic in real life so i need my truck. thanks

ha....solved the ranger brake issue

well i found the faulty part on my ranger. slave cylender ruptured. still have yet to work on explorer. got some manuals and will pull al relays till i find the soucre. any help or sugestions would be great.

check the wiring, that fuse should not be heating up.... check the grounds to the starter, since we are looking at an 60 amp fuse blowing, its got to be something big, a little 16 guage signal wire cant pull that much power...

apart from rippnig the harness out of the engine camaprtment. i have already looked att the wires under dash. ther eis no smell of smoke. when it first did this. had some guys at the shop look at it. they unp-lug relays. starter alt fuel ext. they even coded it. found nothing wrong. i found one bare spot on my green ignition wire<they also switch the actual switch> i patched it and it did fine for 4 months. like i said other than pulling the harness<THAt IS my LAST resort> i cant find a burnt bare or faulty spot with just looking. was hoping someone exp. same problem. my dad gave me crash course in multi meters lol. who knows. i might surprise my self.. but thats for input

If that multimeter has a continuity tester try starting there. Probe the wires in question with one probe, then run the other to ground. If it beeps (most testers will beep on a dead short) you have a problem in that circuit somewhere. If you probe a power wire and then it beeps when you run to ground that wire is making contact with a ground somewhere. Not sure that this is a perfect solution because I don't know too much about the engine wiring. But it's worth a shot.

i just had the same issue.....changed the ignition switch, with no luck. I then unhooked the alt alt and the coil pack. Fuse didnt blow when cranked. hooked up the alt . still had a fuse. hooked up the coil.....fuse go boom. replaced coil pack. Now it cranks without blowing fuse, but not sounds like its out of time. any ideas on that?

I saw this thread while fixing the same issue. I tried everything and no one had really answered the question. I kept blowing ignition fuses(#8 on in cabin fuse box) no matter what I unplugged it blew a fuse when I turned the key forward.


Just to share MY specific circulstances; i was left with a battery issue(internally shorted). I tried everything else first since the battery had 12 volts when testing. I swapped the battery just randomly as "well this spare battery is sitting here let me try it...". I hope this helps someone. Learned alot while diagnosing this, especially how ridiculously simple these are to steal via 3 5.5mm bolts and a pinch and the ignition switch is in your hand.
