Would welcome any feedback on a 'frozen' key lock problem. The ignition key tumbler is stuck in the position just past the normal enter and removal of key position (last position counter-clockwise). The key goes in and can be removed but, the tumbler will not turn. We have tried all the usual stuff (ie moving the key back and forth, trying to engage a gear, etc.)...nothing seems to work. Again, any wisdom would be more than welcome. Next step is to call a locksmith. Thanks, in advance!

Have you tried turning the wheel back and forth while turning the ignition?

On my 96, a similar problem happens when the steering isn't locked. I found that I needed to move the steering in a direction that would "lock it" so that it wouldn't turn, then the key is able to function.

Thanks for the info. but, I have tried turning the wheel in that direction and it does not help. I know exactly what you mean and normally that should do the trick. This is really frustrating! I even checked the fuses to see if there was any chance of an electronic problem...could not find any that looked like they had failed.

Just to be clear that I understand your "tried turning the wheel in that direction and it doesn't help".... does this mean that you are able to lock the steering? If your steering will not lock, then I believe this is the root of your problem as the cam that locks your steering also links to the key tumblers. As for the direction, it can be either direction, it just depends on where the cam is currently sitting but once it is locked, it will not be turnable (in one direction) without significant force while it will move slightly in the other.... is this what you have? I have found that the key lock may "bind" a bit depending on how hard the clock spring is wound, thus you might have to "help" it a bit by placing force on the steering lock (away from where it will not move) and then trying to turn the key. I haven't tried it but perhaps a bit of lubricant in the area might help.

Thanks for the input. Had tried cranking the wheel hard each way, while simultaneously trying the key, to no avail. I had to end up taking it to my local mechanic and it looks like the cylinder and tumblers need to be replaced (ouch!). Unfortunately, I just did not have the available time to do the work myself. Anyway, I appreciate your thoughts...thanks,
