1997 Ford Explorer 5.0
Greeting fellow truck enthusiasts.
I am glad to have been introduced to this sight.
Heres the problem...I have a 1997 ford explorer xlt with the 5.0 engine. I noticed today while replacing the bank 2 02 sensor, that I had quite a bit of oil around the driver's side front shock tower mount. Upon closer inspection of the problem, I saw that there was a rubber hose line clipped to the inside of the shock mount. It goes up along the side of the mount and points upwards towards the top of the hood and has a white platic connector. BUT There was nothing connected to it. I looked around for any loose lines but there werent any. Could someone tell me what it is and what the heck I have to do to correct this problem. Thankyou in advance and I really appriciate it.

On both our 2001 and 2003 2 door Sport models, we had problems with the front
differential vent tube puking gear oil which I noticed over the driver side cv boot.
At first I thought it was the cv boot until I got a wiff of it and realized it was gear
oil. The vent line, which look similar to rubber fuel line, terminates near the power steering pump on our models and had a vent cap attached. (It looks like a white conntector). On both our models there was a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) and
the dealer ended up removing the front differential cover and either adding or replacing a baffle which eliminated the problem. I realize your vehicle is a 97... and I'm not sure what years the TSB covered...but see if it smells like gear oil and that will at least tell you where it coming from.

George.
