Looking for recommendations on what to buy. Unfortunately I can't spend too much but I do need to replace all 4. What I have now are 235/75/15 and would basically look to get the same or very close to it. I seen Uniroyal Laredos and Cross Countrys for I believe 100 bucks a piece. Any advice is appreciated.

The tires I have on there now, Goodyear Wrangler ATs, were put on my truck as part of the Firestone recall. But these now have thread separation and I was told by the tire shop they were not worth trying to balance. Should Ford warranty these tires?

My truck sees mostly city and alot of highway driving so I'm not overly concerned with an off road tire. I don't want too much road noise, and I do an occassional trail blaze with the family in the mountains.

Cheers,

lbrowne

I just got in from putting a set of Firestone Destination LE's on my 2000 Explorer Sport. I only drove the car for 5 miles, but I am thoroughly impressed so far. Very queit and nice smooth ride. I bought them from Tirerack.com. They are one of the highest rated light truck tires they sell. I bought 255/70/15 since I just put on American Racing 15x8 wheels, the tires were $91 shipped each. I am sure the 235/75/15s would be cheaper.

I was considering the Firestone Destination LE's, but a salesman at Discount Tire told me how their construction allows more side to side flexing, thus the outer edges wearing faster. I might still consider them regardless. Good ratings from Consumer Reports. The salesman also told me that if I hate the Goodyear Wrangler RT/S, then I will hate these as well.

Right now, I am looking at some Kumho Touring A/S 795. Respectable ratings on Tirerack. Available from a local Discount Tire for $59. Good bargain. No raised white lettering, which is something I kinda would like, but for $59, I pry could live without it.

The thing with getting tires from online somewhere is that you then have to take your vehicle to a shop to get them installed and balanced - some places are not too keen on that. Otherwise I would.

Not too many responses just yet though...I think I am going to call to see if they'll warranty the tires since they put em on as part of a recall.

Does Discount Tire sell Firestone in your area? I was just looking at their website (assuming we are talking about the same place) and they do not carry them. To be honest, I think it is BS about the side to side flexing. I didn't see the ratings from Consumer reports, but the reviews on Tirerack were excellent, they were ratings from over 500 people. I think the Discount Tire rep was just trying to sell you on something he had.

There is a huge difference between the Goodyear Wranglers and the Firestone Destination LE's, I know that from personal experiences.

The Kumhos are probably decent tires too. I run Kumho tires in the winter on my Mustang, no real complaints about them.

I am not trying to steer you away from the Kumho's but I would hate to see you miss out on some real good tires based on the Discount Tire guy's opinion. He is either uniformed, wrong, or trying to make a buck.

I have ordered tires online several times, and this time, I was thinking the same thing so tried to find them locally. I checked all over and couldn't find comparable tires for a comparable price locally. I ended up getting them mounted at Walmart. I was a little skeptical at first, but they have all the same equipment as any other tire place, and it is rocket science to mount and balance a tire. It is actually very simple to do, expecially with the equipment they have. Since I didn't buy the tires there, mounting was $3.50 per tire. 2 choices on balancing, one time balance $5 per tire, or lifetime for $7.50 per tire. They did a real nice job. Most other local places would have charged double especially since I didn't buy the tires from them.

lbrowne, I seriously doubt Ford will warranty the Goodyear tires.

I know what you mean about buying on tires on line & finding a place to mount them. I was going to buy tires on line two years ago when I needed tires.
I called several places before I ordered them and since I did not purchase the tires from them they wanted $25-$30 US per tire to mount & balance.

I ended up buying Wheel Trac A/T from Firestone which is a private lable tire which they make. The price was really good. I paid $85 a tire for 31x10x15 and have had good luck with them.

Actually I have a Walmart near me and I'll call to check what it would cost to get tires mounted and balanced there.

You can get BFG AT's in stock size. That's the only tire I would use on an X. They have great wear, great traction, & are quiet at HW speed.

I would look at the Uniroyal Liberator A/T. A 235/75/15 is $60 US
Liberator A/T

Any Canucks order from Tirerack.com? Duty charges and shipping must be dumb on orders from there... The tire prices are great but shipping and duty would make it not really a deal at all.

I really like my Dunlop Radial Rovers 235 75 R15. Good grip in everything but deep snow but they have little tread left now, But other than that they have no road noise at all and have around 50000 miles on them I think. But from the looks of it on Tirerack the tread patterns have changed so they may be total crap now. I'm currently looking to get the Toyo Open Country AT but my bank account is limiting me.

Yeah, the Firestones sound like a decent tire. I was just passing along some info that the salesman told me. He was not pushing any tire on me.

What are some of the differences between the Goodyear RT/S and the Firestone Destination LE? Good and bad ones?

I am planning on buying before winter hits. The Firestones would cost me $100 more total over the total for the Kumhos. Still digging around for other choices though...

I replaced my tires a couple of months back with the same stock Michelin style that came with it and I improved my mpg by about 2mpg just from having the new tires on. I went from 17.9 to 19.6mpg with just new tires at 35psi.

I just had 4 new Tough Terrain SUV tires put on last weekend. Nice pattern for alot of the highway driving I do. Man what a different in ride just tires can make!

I cant quite remember how much I paid for my stock size tire replacements, but I loved my michealin LTX tires. They were either 265 or 275. /shrug
