I'm new and I need advice on a 1996 Explorer.

How difficult is it to recon the tranny? What is involved? What can I do to lengthen the lifespan before el callapse-o?

Fluid changes every 20K(severe) - 30K(easy) miles and a trans cooler is the best advice for any transmission.

There are plenty of threads on trannys check the tranny forums or start a diff thread.

I think everything that is the basics has been said also 150,000 miles on a 96, a 15 year old truck is really low mileage thats an average of 10,000 miles a year. who is the previous owner ask if anything was played with or the reason why it has low miles. is it through a dealer or private either way i gotta say about towing i have only towed my brother n laws 27 foot boat about 30-40 miles and no problems at all power was still there (although i have read if you change the t-case to parttime 4x4 it preforms better and has more towing power) I LOVE MY TRUCK and i reccomend jumping on it if everything checks out. as you can see just scanning this website they can be alot of fun with countless mods to choose from, along with alot of support from the experts that are here in the community.

40R70W what the heck a hybrid transmission? haha just joking

A 96 5.0 with 150,000 is a good truck... The transmission in mine still shifts great and has 190,000 miles on it...with proper care this truck will go into the 200,000+
