Year, Model & Trim Level
coming soon
Hi, im thinking of buying a first gen Explorer and i have some questions. Im somewhat new to explorers( my other car is a 91 ranger Xtra cab with the 4.0). What i wanted to know is...

1. Does the Eddie Bauer trim level include manual hubs? For some reason the most popular used for sale Explorer around here is the Ernie Bauer. I most definatly want manual hubs.

2. Is there anything i should look out for in these years? My ranger isnt a good thing for me to go off of because it has 217k miles on it and ive wheeled it fairly hard for a stock truck. It has a starting problem that im chasing down but thats another post/story

Anyway thanks for your time and glad i found this forum.

Welcome to the board. The weak link in these are the auto transmission and the auto hubs. It's not hard to switch the auto hubs to manual and not that expensive. It depends how hard you wheel and how often as to how they may effect you.I have the auto tranny and auto hubs and like them both.I don't wheel that hard though.

How hard is it with the auto to manual hubs? Just remove and replace or what?

Brooklyn Bay: Thanks for the links but neither is my problem.

What it is, is i had an intermittent staring problem that i thought was the starter or the solenoid going bad(both at seperate times) when i couldnt get the starter to turn over, i jumped the solenoid to get it home and replaced the solenoid. it worked for awhile then the starter died. I replaced the starter and the problem disapeared for awhile. Then when i went to start it i got nothing but the fuel pump going, i.e no clicking at all, but it would start the 2nd or 3rd time after pressing in the clutch again. So i replaced the clutch interlock switch. The problem went away again for a couple of weeks and came back. So i tried replacing ignition switch and it didnt help. I then replaced the ignition key cylinder and it didnt do anything either.

I was fairly disgusted with it so i let it sit for a couple of weeks and didnt work on it and borrowed my parents Bronco II. When i went to work on it again, i had no dash lights, the starter wouldnt engage, and even if i jumped the solenoid it would not start. Right now there is no spark, and no power at all to the ignition system.

Sorry thats so long, but if you do know of anything that could help me i would really appreciate it. Its my first car so im not going to get rid of it, but im getting a little tired of working on it.

Did you try putting a load tester on the battery? What about cleaning the terminals, and putting on a special brush on antioxidant that is made just for that? Did you check your ground connections, fuses, and fusible links (if you have those in your model). Some models have high current fuses under the hood. Relays also go bad after a while like the computer, and fuel pump relays.

The terminals have been cleaned and clamps and cables have been replaced. I ve checked all the fuses both under the hood and inside and none are blown. All the grounds are hooked up and working, and i havent seen any fusible links when i ve been chasing down the wiring. The battery is new and fully charged and has been tested in another car to make sure it would provide enough current to start.

I havent looked at any relays, where are they located?

Thanks a bunch!

You should have a row of 4 relays under the hood on the driver's side.

Thanks! I ll check that out.
