2002 explorer sport
get your attention?? i was just wondering... ive heard so much about the explorer sealed trannys, and the stock 4.0 v6 SOHC putting out average of 160 horses.....i have an 02 sport 2dr and after some research found that first of all...i have a dipstick...and second the 02 4.0 has 203 rwhp stock. ive added an intake and minor stuff and dynoed at a friends shop averaging 209 horses....i also noticed that the 2000 and older 4.0's with 160hp are (by the numbers at least) the exact same engine (4016ci)....etc. etc.

guess im wondering what makes the hp and trq jump from the diff years? and why does my model year have a dipstick and not others???

i wanna be like you...(unless im better than you than you should be like me!)

thanx

There are 2 versions of the 4.0, a SOHC and OHV. The OHV put out 160 hp, 1997+ had the option of the SOHC.

I've never heard of Explorers having sealed transmissions.

The 4.0L SOHC has always had over 200HP at the crank.

The 4.0L OHV has 160HP (or so) at the crank. They're two totally different motors. Don't let the liter size fool you.

4,016 cubic inches? Where are you getting all this information from? Not here, right?!

cc sorry....on specs from a ford website....ill find the link but it listed 4.0 sohc with 160 hp and 01 explorer having 210 adn 02 sport with 203....and from here is where i got the sealed tranny thing.... ill look for post on that and put up link as well

I believe the 02 sport models were still using the 5R55E.. If your rig still has a solid rear axle and a conventional IFS from setup with torsion bars than I'm right.

yea it does...wishbone front/solid rear ive also heard (from this site) that the sealed version is known for problems ..is this true and is the 5R55E any better???

The sealed version IIRC is being used on the '02-up 3rd-generation Explorers. I believe they changed over to the 5R55W for '04(?). Basically the same trans with some internal modifications. If you want specifics on the transmissions, ask the gurus over in the transmissions and t-case forum. They'll be able to explain it much better than I can.

This should be 4,016 CC, .....cubic centimeters.....not C.I.....cubic inches...altho' I like 245 c.i. for my V6 better than 4.0Liter.......
