I'm pulling out my KKM...

If I can't get my chip to work (I'm starting to get depressed...), I'm going to pull out my KKM.

Ever since I put this damn thing in, in combination with my cat-back, my GPM has SEVERELY gone down the tubes. Regardless if I drive like grandma or my future teenage son, I constantly hit the 250 mi/tank mark. Well, now that friggin winter is here and these guys love that gas additive (MTMB?), I'm hitting only in the 200 mark.

So, I'm pulling out my KKM and am going to run some tests without it, and see what happens.

What do you guys think will happen? I'm thinking nothing, but will be surprised if either my power goes down, or my GPM goes up or down.

(Sorry, I'll get off my soapbox now. I'm just depressed, a complete waste of money on my KKM and cat-back (worst $350 I've ever spent), and I've been working on this chip for about 3 weeks now.).

I don't really think you will actually notice much, I don't think that would be the cause of a MPG loss.

Test your coolant temp sensor for the computer, it may be sending a false reading telling the computer that the engine hasn't warmed up yet and the computer is giving the engine more gas than necessary.

I did that on my Pontiac and it went from 17mpg on the highway to 26. Also check your fuel pressure regulator to make sure the diaphram isn't broke and it's sucking gas in directly that way

Make sure your kkm filter wasn't overoiled and dirtied up the MAF and/or the IAT.

i only get in the low 200's city driving. more on highway. i dont know of any decrease in mpg with my mac intake, but it sounds better. and honestly.. even on my college budget of $3 a year, paying a couple bucks more for filling up isnt that bad. i knew what i was gettin into when i bought the car, and didnt except anything more than 10/15 mpg.

Maybe you have vacuum leaks with the KKM adapter.

i honestly dont think that anything is wrong with the truck. it just gets bad mileage. the winter gas in the last couple of weeks is making my mileage go down slightly also (i usually get around 250-270 or so, and now im getting just over 200.) you can experiment with the kkm, but i dont think youll find too much.

Just can't understand all these EX's with such poor mileage. My 99 SOHC with the 4.10 rear gets around 15-16 mpg city and always 20-21 mpg highway. I can go almost 400 miles on trips.

You have the SOHC, and we're talkin OHVs here. You also have fewer miles than most 1st gen owners. Unless they have lots of new parts, an old vehicle won't get as good gas mileage as it did when it was newer.

200-250 is pretty accurate on city mpg on a 1st gen
300+ is typical on highway

this equates to 13/18

The only new parts mine has is 4 new O2 sensors that were replaced about 3K miles ago. My Spark Plugs were last changed at 50K miles, everything else on my engine has 97K miles on it. As you can see from my graph, mileage doesn't always get worse as a vehicle gets older. The graph below starts in 7/97 when I bought my Explorer new and goes through my last tank of gas from Monday. My trend line has gone from about 15.6 MPG when new to 17.6 mpg now. All of the low spikes are either from towing my tent trailer or 4-wheeling.

My 94 with 120,000 miles get's 17-18 city and 19-21 at 70mph.

on my 93 i was only getting 200 mpg thats at "E" i think that it can go a bit past that though cause at "E" i filled up (my 19 gallon tank) and it only took 16 gallons to fill it. I recently changed my 02 sensor (15 min job) and cleand my maf and iac 20 min job **have to dry completely** now i get 250 in town and havnt had it on the highway yet. my motor is completely stock and it well taken care of. I changed my o2 at my house in the garage and i found it easier to cut the wires from the o2 and then stick it up into the engine compartment and recrimped the new o2 on from there then *carefully* let it back down and screwed the o2 back in. just a helpful tip incase you do this .

RVITECK, make everything stock again (no chip) and reset your computer. Drive it awhile and see what happens. A modern computer-controlled, fuel injected engine should not significantly drop its fuel economy over time unless something is wrong, broken, or not maintained. Many actually get better mileage after about 40,000 or so than they did when the truck was new. I suspect all these low mileage EX's have something wrong with the fuel delivery system or emmision control devices that are not tripping the CEL. It is a mystery and am glad I am not plagued with it.

Thanks guys for all your help and replies.

This is my plan for now to see what happens.

Keep everything as is (I don't have the chip working, so it's just intake / exhaust mods) and plug it into a scanner to see if any codes are being thrown out. If so, I'll then attack them and get everything to where it needs to be.

I have 38K miles.

Then, check plugs, clean MAF, IAC and if needed via the scan, replace the bad stuff. Someone mentioned clean the TB, how is that done? Via Sea Foam, or is their another procedure (I searched with no results)?

I can't believe you'll get that bad a gas milage. Even with all the mods, I still get 15MPG and that equates to around 300 miles to the tank full. Hell it used to get around 400 miles to the tank full before I modified it.

On the older throttle bodies, you just spray carb cleaner in there to get the carbon deposits off the inside bore and throttle plate. You want to be careful not to spray cleaner into the TPS (throttle position sensor) though because you could potentially screw it up.

On later throttle bodies like my 97, there may be a coating on the inside of the throttle body which can be damaged by carb cleaner. Mine has a sticker warning not to spray solvents which will damage the coating. In this case, you probably don't need to clean it, but if you do, I would suggest just wiping with a clean rag or using a soft brush (old toothbrush) to get rid of the deposits around the edges of the throttle plate (if any).

If you try the Seaform route, be sure to run engine while adding it!

My 97 OHV gets 11 to 14mpg towing a 3000# camper and 26mpg solo on the hi-way.
Wonder if it is because of the manual transmission?

I usually fill up around 330 miles when traveling solo, 200 when towing.

Wish the Sport had a bigger tank.

wow i'm really surprised at the MPG showing in here. my 92 with 176k gets 330 miles to the tank in the city about about 400 on the highway. i have a manual transmission that wouldn't make all the difference would it? and you can see below what mods i have done.
