Lat night I helped this guy to get his 93 Explorer out of the mud because it got stuck. When I engaged 4WD LOW, as I was pulling I could hear grinding noises coming from the front. When we were done, I switched it back to 2WD but it wouldn't go to 2WD. It was still in 4WD becuase the light was still in the dash and when I tried to drive it, I could still hear the grinding noises. I tried cycling the switch again but it still said 4WD. Does anybody know what is wrong?

You did have the vehicle in neutral while attempting to disengage it right?

The 4 low only engages/disengages in neutral, and in some cases with your foot on the brake too....

I don't know if it would be the same in a '95, but sometimes I have to put it in neutral, press the button, wait, and then turn the truck off and start it again for it to pop out of 4 wheel. I don't know why it does that, but just an idea...

Hey guys, thanks for your input. I did have in neutral when I first tried it. While waiting for somebody to reply, I went to try it again and BINGO! This is what I did. When I started the truck again, the 4WD LOW light was still on. I put in in reverse and went back like 20 feet. Put it back in Park, waited a couple of seconds and then shifted to Drive, the 4WD LOW light went off and I heard it disengage. I was relieved. I thought for sure that I had to take somewhere to get it fixed. My only concern now was the terrible grinding noises that it was making when in 4WD low. But oh well, at least I'm back to 2WD.

I have to roll mine back and forth and stick it in neutral to get it out of 4x4 lo. don't ya love electronic transfer cases?

morbo, that sounds like your auto hubs are about to blow, or have blown already.... time to look at some manual hubs

We don't have auto hubs. Our frontend is always engaged. Only place it disengages is at the T-Case.

In my truck I have to press the brake most of the way down to get it out of low. It isn't enough to just light the brake lights. This is prob. to keep people from shifting while moving.

When did they stop using autohubs? I thought for sure my 1996 had them.

94 was the last year (I believe). The newer Xplorer setup is CV shafts . The CV shaft is always engaged with the outer hub/bearing assembly. And the shaft is always engaged in the Diff Housing. The only place it dissengages is the front shaft at the T-Case. Really to bad, cause I would love the option of putting manual hubs on my X.

The '95's do have a vacuum disconnect on the front differential. You may want to make sure that it is still attached. May also want to check the fluid level in the differential too.
