besides adding power does adding a new intake improve your gas mileage?, also what are some inexpensive things you can do to improve power and gas mileage, without having to spend a ton of money? if you know ,your help would be great

A performance muffler may get you a 1 to 2 mpg increase. I saw a little over two with mine, but that's just on two tanks of gas so the jury is still out on that. Adding a K&N or KKM intake will increase gas mileage, but again probably not more then 1 or 2mpg. You're looking at 300 to 350 to add both those things.

I didn't notice what year your X was, but if it is no longer under warranty I would suggest going with the 'swiss cheese' air box. Remove the filter and drill holes in the box below. This allows more air to be sucked in when the engine wants it. You won't notice a whole lot of power or mpg increase, but it's worth a shot. Of course there is also the 6 funnel mod...search for 'ghetto' and you find it.

I don't think that the swiss cheese is the best option anymore. The engine likes a straight shot of cold air, and my "cold air" setup is actually one of the better extremely cheap mods that my roommate has seen in a long timeMany of his dragracing buddies have either seen it or have heard about it, and they believe that is was the thing to do for the money. So far, it seems to work since I've been getting slightly better gas milage on my '97 Mountaineer V8 than my sister has on her '94 Explorer. In fact on the last run back home, on the return trip, I got a little over 21 mpg and she got around 19 mpg.

Check out info on "cold air" here: Dead Link Removed

Synthetic motor oil, transmission fluid, and gear oil will significantly reduce the friction in the drivetrain. Plus they run cooler and last longer to help extend component life and maintain optimum performance. When I switched my'95 to AMSOIL, I improved my gas mileage by 17%.

Mucho MPG

I wacked ( used a sawzall) my Catilctic Converter. And took it to the local muffler shop and told them to weld a pipe where the converter was. I got a whole bunch more gas mileage. For thirty bucks go to your local Muffler shop and tell them that you want them to weld in a piece of pipe where the cat was.

Hey, I live in Clemmons too!!! Anyways...if you want to get a few more miles out of your tank of gas, you can pump up the tires. Also try to clean the MAS and change the spark plugs. From what I've heard, you can also get more power and mileage if you install a cat-back. Oh, and the most important of all...take the lead off your foot!!! That would increase your mileage dramatically.
