Year, Model & Trim Level
95 Explorer 2wd 4.0L
I just bought an Explorer the other day from a private party. Unfortunately the seller didn't know much about it aside from it being a '95, 4 door, and 2WD. After checking it out I know that it is a V6, 4.0L EFi, and a 4 speed automatic. I have tried doing VIN checks and using Google and the best I found is that there was the Eddie Bauer edition (which I know mine isn't), Limited, XLT, and XL. One site I was on to check the VIN listed it as a XL but it also said that it was a 5 speed manual transmission while in fact mine is a 4 speed automatic. How do I find out that type I have?

I also have 2 kids, both in child seats, and there are no tether ancors in the back seat for their car seats. Is there a certain spot for them to be mounted?

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help me out.

What is it you're trying to identify? Did you pull the back seat down and see if the belts are pushed down inside?

XLS, XLT, Eddie Bauer and Limited are trim levels (least fancy to most fancy in that order). there's usually some indication, as to which on the liftgate, but it doesn't make much difference as mechanically they all start out being the same vehicle. a vin check should nail it down. i'm not sure what you're saying about seat belts. all models will have rear seat belts. there should be a shoulder belt on each c-pillar and a center lap belt. none of my trucks have anything more than that.

Don't forget the XL. ;)

And, it says on the truck/tailgate, as mentioned above.

I'm trying to identify the sub-model of my Explorer.

I did run a vin check on it and it listed my Explorer as a XL. The problem was the check also said that it was a 5 speed manual transmission. Mine happens to be a 4 speed automatic. All of the other information that came up was correct aside from that. Because it listed it having a manual trans I wasn't sure if the vin check was accurate saying my Explorer was a XL. What do you guys think? I hadn't checked the back of the lift gate but when it is light out tomorrow I will, thanks for that. I'd do it now but I just got off of work and it's 2am.

The back seat does have seat belts. I apologize I should have more specific, when I said tether anchors I was referring to the brackets that newer model vehicles have to attach the belts that child seats use. I have a 4 and 1 year old and both of them are in car seats. Currently there is no tether anchors in the back seats to hook up the belts.

i normally dont go off a name plate badge. anyone can stick a xl, or xlt plate on and pass it off. normally all the xlt's i have seen (and could be wrong) have bucket seats, and a center console as well as power windows. if yours has 60/40 split front seat with the fold down arm rest, you more then likely have a xl

I think another thing is the Fog lights?

I'm pretty sure that the XLTs came with them, but the XLs did not?
All I know is my XL doesn't have fog lights, but it does have the harnesses for them. I wonder if they work?

most of the ones i see are XLT's. i've never even seen an XL

my xlt does not have fog lights

Most private parties get XLS over an XL. XL's are generally fleet vehicles. Can you put up a few pictures both inside and out? That will make it a lot easier for us to tell you what it it is.
