I tried to replace tensioners and guides on my 03 explorer 4.6 sohc and while I was doing so the cams moved when I removed tensioners! The chains where still on so I figured it would be ok. After i put it all together I tried turning the crank ever so gently by hand and got 3/4 of a full revolution then I felt a bit of binding so I stopped and now here I am. If Simone could help me I would really appreciate it

update

well I did not get much help from this site with my timing job so I figure I will post what my solution was to help others with the same issue. after the cams moved when tensioners were released I thought I was in trouble but I simply turned the cams back as close as I could without putting to much stress on them and placed the chains back on and tensioners. I then turned the crank to top dead center and then turned the crank counter clockwise 45 degrees to put the engine in safe mode to ensure that when turning the cams I did not make piston to valve contact.so anyhow with the engine in safety mode I removed the chains and tensioners and turned the cams to the position they would be in to line up timing marks on chains and sprockets. I then turned the crank back to top dead center and installed the chains and tensioners and put everything back together. our explorer started right up and has a very steady idle and is very quiet. power is still very strong so it was a success!!!! I hope someone finds this helpful and the bottom line of this is the job can be done without special cam holding tool but having the tool makes the job much easier!:salute:

Glad to hear you had such great success with a tough job. And thanks for posting your results.

You may have gotten limited responses because there's a limited number of people who are willing to take on such a challenge, with myself at the head of that line. Most of us can do a certain amount of wrenching on our cars but there's some things that I would prefer to leave to people who know what they're doing.

Congrats and thanks for the follow up.
