2001 xls
Hi. I have a 2001 xls. Whenever I accelerate going up an incline there is a very obvious droning /humming sound that comes from under the hood area. It pretty much only does it when accelerating up a hill. I just had the IAC replaced with no difference. Any ideas? Thanks, Pauly.

Does it seem to happen as the engine RPM falls to a fairly low level? Sometimes my transmission will shift the engine out of it's powerband and the humming/droning noise accompanies it until the RPM's change.

rpm drop

Thanks for replying. It doesn't seem to be accompanied by an rpm drop. Could it even be tire rotation issue because of bad alignment causing a rubbing?

noise

It actually does seem to happen at about 2800 rpms whenever it does happen. The dealer told me that it could be the iac, but that made no difference when replaced. He also told me that it might be normal, but how can it be normal if it just started happening and is loud?

to an answere to your question, as a vehicle ages noises do accur. when you go up the "hill" you say the noise starts immediatly? i would be sure it was the transmission but if its coming from under the hood thats a tuffy, the best thing to do is go to your dealership and have him ride in it with you, then go to a hill and show him. if he is any kind of a mechanic he would have done this already

o and my xplorer (94 xlt) has a drone at about 1500 rpm it kinda gets stuck in that range until i apply pressure to the pedal. it is usually preping to switch into a higher gear.

humming/droning

Thanks for the reply. The truck only has 58, 000km on it and I don't offroad or anything. Just drive to work etc. I'm only concerned because it has never done it before and is irritating especially if I take a trip where it's hilly or mountainous. If it does it at around 2800 rpms maybe it's a tranny sound like you said. I'm concerned it might be a problem down the road. Not to mention I need to tow my boat with it. Any other ideas would be appreciated. Thanks, Pauly.

Mine has the same sound, especially up an incline and I give it a little extra gas. Does it from 50MPH up. If I let off the pedal slightly, it will go away. When I mentioned it to Ford, they said IAC, which was replaced, but the noise is still there. Noise been there since 40K and I have 92K+ now, so it hasn't caused any trouble that I'm aware of.... Will try Ford again since my Extended Warranty is gonna run out soon. Maybe I can get something replaced to cover cost of warranty.........

tplynch

Thanks tplynch. If you find anything out please post it. I'm just kind of frustrated because I shouldn't have to work around going certain places or at a certain speed or rpm to avoid a noise. Not for something that costs that much. Thanks, Pauly.

Same thing on my 2001 XLT, just started after the 36,000 mile transmission service. Does is mostly on up hill travel, when more gas is applied, but will go away when it up shifts. Hope its not a problem. What did the extended warranty cost?? also whats an IAC??

My 00 makes the same noise, going uphill at slower speeds. It dosen't affect the running, just an annoying noise. It's not a rattle, more like a "whooshing" sound. I thought it might be from the radiator fan, or maybe the fan clutch........?

IAC = Idle Air Control.

its not the transmission, i have the same problems, and i have had 2 transmissions fully replaced. drivelines and such a lot of undercarriage done on it. im at 102k miles and its been doing it since arround 40k
