thank you in advance for any replies. i have searched the forums and think i have found the answers im looking for. however there are certain parts of the answers i found that don't exactly match what i have going on.
for instance,im like 90% sure i have a cv joint/axle going out on my front drivers side. when driving in a straight line, i have what i i would consider to be a clunk or a clank starting 1mph and increasing.
the only problem is this is not a constant noise. some days its there and OBNOXIOUS! i feel the vibration in the steering wheel. some days there but quiet and then some days not noticeable at all (i drive the same roads every day so its not the road surface). i tried diagnosing the issue by grabbing the axle to see if there is any play in it. i get no movement left right up or down. but when i pull in to out. i hear what i believe to be the "clunk" from the wheel side of the axle. from the answers i have found there should be a little in/out play to allow for axle movement when the wheel is turned. but should i hear a "clunk" with that movement?
as far as i know the axle is original with 200k miles on it so it wouldn't surprise me if its going out. however im on a very tight budget and i don't want to (cant) spend the 70 to 80 bucks in parts if that's not the actual problem. id rather fix the issue and be done with it.
if anyone can give me some good pointers on what i should be looking for or any other tests i can do to diagnose the issue to make sure its the cv axle i would greatly appreciate it.....or if you think its another issue entirely please let me know.
