Right now I have Infinity Reference 5x7's all around. I was contimplating upgrading to maybe a kappa component system in the front, and kappa 5x7's in the rear. I am looking for quality vs. loudness, will I hear a great difference in quality if I up grade to kappa?

You might notice a little difference, but you'll really have to think if it's worth it now. Plus, if you can hear the difference, you may not even like it enough to justify the cost. The cost of these new speakers isn't just the cost of them, but also the cost of the one's you'd be tossing.

For that amount of money, you could probably start contemplating a single sub with a small amp to power it, which would make a much more noticable improvement for the money you'd be spending.

The audio bug bites hard, so spend wisely or you'll burn money like the rest of us!

Thats a very good point about the cost. I just noticed when looking on ebay I could get a pair of kappa component speaker for 150-170ish, and a pair of kappa 5x7's for 83, now I spent 99 for each pair of reference at circuit city, plus installation(you'll all probably laugh when you hear how much I paid for that, never gonna pay for that again). Yeah so I was just contimplating what to do with some of the money I get back when ford repays me for my new tires.

Are the Kappas the old green cone ones or the new Ceramic cones. If they are the old green cones stay with the Referance series and put the money toward a sub.

I prolly wouldn't laugh - it'd just remind me of how much I paid for my first pair of speakers too with installation!

They are the newer ones, ceramic.

the new kappas are great, but i agree with JTang. you already have good aftermarket speakers, so why not put the money somewhere else (where it will make a bigger difference).

what would be involved in maybe getting some seperate tweeters, some subs and an amp, how hard would that be to hook up?

MHanrahan, I have something that might interest you...

I have a set of Infinity Kappa 57.1cs component speakers that I will sell.
They include the 2- 5x7 drivers, 2- seperate tweeters, and 2- crossover boxes.
Here's the deal...
The 5x7 drivers are warped by the sun. They still sound fine but they look like crap. The Kappa tweeters and crossovers are in perfect condition. You could easily add the crossovers and seperate tweeters to your existing system and I assure you, with the tweeters properly located, you WILL notice a difference.
I will sell the whole set for $100 + shipping.
I agree with the others, adding a powered sub is a must for pure sound quality, even at lower volumes. I would recommend that at some time. But for now, the forementioned crossover/tweeter setup would be a nice addition to your system.

it's not hard to hook up. instead of just gettinng seperate tweeters, you should hold off and get a nice component set (5 1/4 or 6 1/2). that way you'll get great midbass and highs, and the door speakers will fill in the midrange. but for now concentrate on the sub for the low end bass. a sub and amp are easy to hook up. if you get a single voice coil sub it's even easier (just like hooking up a speaker). the amp will come with the directions how to install it. if you've never done this before, it'll still take less than an hour to run the wires and hook them up.

Do you have an amp pushing your speakers now?? For the price of new Kappa's you could get a good amp to power your speakers and would increase the way those speakers sound 10 fold.

What does everyone think of the infinity Bass Link, and will it fit in the little cutout thing in the trunk, I don't want to take up much or any of the room back there if possible

i've havent heard the basslink yet, but i think Brian has. in another thread i think he said it wasn't that great.

The Infinity Basslink is high priced and will not fit in your side cargo compartment.

There are better sub setups to be had for the rear of the Explorer...

MHanrahan, I had hoped the prospect of getting a complete set of Kappa seperate tweeters, crossovers, and an extra set of 5x7 drivers for $100 would at least be worth acknowledging my offer, whether to accept or decline.

Sorry wabbit, I think I am going to hold off for right now, but thanks for the offer.

Lots of problems with them. From engine noise, sub motorboating when on to not turning on at time to not shutting off at time.
Go with a amplified Thunderform if you do not want to loose space.
Another option is Bazooka Bass tubes. I have done a couple with 2 amplified 10" and the customer loved it. They can be unplugged and removed if you need the space.

componenets are always better then 3 ways i think.
