Im thinking about buying a 1994 explorer but the heads are off and need replacing. the suv has 118k and is clean other than the engine problem. can anybody how hard this is going to be to put back together and a rough idea what its worth. If it helps it is in a area that rust is not a issue and thanks for any help

How hard it is going to be is subjective, depends on how good you are with a wrench. It will be harder if your not the one who took it apart, you might want to try and find someone you know who has a Explorer of about the same year to make sure everything gets put back where it belongs. I would myself buy this truck, if I could get it cheap enough. With no heads if it's 2wd I myself would pay maybe $200ish, with 4x4 $300-450ish (just because 4x4 is worth so much more then other places in the country here in the midwest). Not a penny more, and probably a whole lot less. That would depend on what shape the rest of the truck was in. 118k isn't bad at all for these trucks. Course take into account if you do put it back together that head, intake, and valve cover gaskets are not exactly cheap. And heads are not your garden varity shade tree fair, really it comes down to how much you know about cars yourself.

If you can't do it, and have to take it somewhere, expect a bill in the range of $600-1500 to put it all back together. Also if you can't get it you maybe able to sell it, but if you junk it you will maybe get $200, (you could part it out for more and make quite a bit) here in the midwest. So if you can do the work yourself it's maybe a good deal, if not, look for a running one you can buy. The only other consideration might be if you buy it cheap, you can put a little money in it at a time and not have to drop the whole wad at once, that's one plus.

My question would be ... why didnt the job get finished? Could be they pulled the heads and there is a bottom end problem which would trash the motor.

I was told it is because the shop wanted $800 to put it back together.I havent bought it yet but as of today i have talked him down from $350 to $225 for it. the truck is clean inside and he said everything worked until he brought it to the shop for overheating. I have a local yard that will sell me used heads with a 30 day warrenty for $45 a set (i have to pull them) Im just wondering if there are any special tools needed and such...Im sure youll also be able to answer alot of questions if i come across any but looking for opinions on if this is a good buy or not...thanks fo any help

i would not put used heads on it!!i would buy it for $225 if its real clean and the tranny was good!!i would put the extra money in it for new heads, you dont know how long old heads will last and you really dont want to be doing this job twice.what is this truck going to used for,dd or toy?

yes a dd for the wife....any idea how hard it is to replace the heads...will i have to mess with timing and such? its been yrs since i turned wrenches due to a injury but we need a cheap transportation and the explorer is clean and I figure its a good buy if i can fix it

what all is removed?if its just the heads its a piece of cake.im about to take my motor out again so i can help you with any problems you run into

As far as tools, a good socket set ,a torque wrench, band-aids, a good bit set with different kinds of torx or star type heads (including, for some insane reason, the reverse socket type of these for the intake), patience, and elbow grease is all you would really need. if just the heads are removed I wouldn't say there is any reason to have to mess with the timing unless they went nuts and removed more then they had too. $225 is probably fair, you could junk it for about that yourself, or part it out and make your money back and more, would just take time. That's how I look at these things, at $225 you could break even so your call.

Course this comes from the guy with the 82 Trans Am that I bought for $100 I've now got over $7000 (and that's at MY labor cost of $0) in it and could sell it for maybe.... $1000? ><. Course I've replaced almost the entire car with the best out of 10 years of cars. I should live what I preach huh? LOL
