No...fuse size is determined by power wire size and length. It has NOTHING to do with the power of the amplifier unless the amplifier requires an external fuse close to the amp.

The inline fuse near the battery is fused according to wire size.

Yep. I agree with Nam, and the fuse should be <18" from the battery.

Max fuse size for 4 gauge I would do is 120 amps. Anything higher I would go with 0 gauge wiring.

But if its allowing 120A that wpuldn't blow if something went wrong, my amp is only a 40A fuse allowing it to blow and possibly damage my amp.

The fuse is not there to protect your equipment, it is there to protect the wire. Now, if you're only using a 40A device, you can use a 40A fuse. You can go up to 125A on 4ga wire.
If the fuse is blowing, that means either your amp is already shot, or the wire is shorted. The fuse on the wire keeps you from having a carbecue.

I know that I just figured why have it so high with such a small device spo that why I asked

You're good, then. It's impossible to jusdge someone's experience level in a 2 minute online conversation. Good luck.
