I have looked and looked and looked for someone with the same issue that I have going on right now. I will give the short history version so it may help the diagnosis process be easier...
I just finished my SAS (to the point that it is on the dirt roads and such) and the vehicle sat since last December during this swap. I started it periodically and let it idle to make sure that the fuel would be pushed through and so on. I noticed the first couple of times that I started it since it has been back on the road that it would miss/sputter/pop/fart if I rev'd the motor hard in P/N/D, etc. It is very clear to hear out of the exhaust and will go pop, dud, pop, dud, VROOOOOM. Once I get out on the road and up to speed it seems to run fine. Just seems like the low end fueling is incorrect. If I try to power brake it, it will do the same. If I hammer it off the line, it will do it and then come out and HAUL!
My Explorer is a 1999 Sport 4.0L SOHC with 65,000 miles and here are the modifications that have been done to the motor:
- AEM Cold air intake
- AirRaid throttle body spacer
- Removed the converters (this is an offroad vehicle only now) and installed some 02 simulators
- MBRP turn down exhaust system
Here is what has all been replaced within the last month or so:
- Motorcraft spark plugs gapped to .054
- Oil/Filter
- Wix fuel filter
- Cleaned the MAF
I don't ever recall this happening in the past, but never payed much attention at the time because I knew it would be going under the SAS knife soon. Could it be contaminated fuel lines, injectors, EGR valve, etc? Some input would be awesome! I want to get it back in tip top shape! Thanks!
