I just got a 2002 Explorer. It has the factory radio with single CD and tape decks. I have a Sony CDX-GT310 I want to install and have XM radio installed.

The issue is I'd be looking at about $150 for installation and I dont want to spend that. I'm going to have the XM turner and such installed, but I think I can do the radio myself.

Do any of you have experience or a guide that I could follow the only ones I have found are for the 1st gen...

THANKS!

its really simply just get the mounting kit and follow those instructions then get a harness adaptor that will plug into the explorer harness wire the harness adaptor to the headunit wires and your done. as long as your not color blind you can do it just match the colors

It's not that hard to install on your own. I did it a month ago, but unfortunately, I had forgotten my camera so no pix...:(

You need to take the center dash out, it's just clips so just take your time, it'll pop off. Then a few screws and the radio is out.

Get the wiring harness like macknos94 said, should go fine. Don't waste $150 for something that takes 20 minutes of your time. Just take your time, don't pull too hard on the dash.

Good luck !

the trim that surrounds the radio and such pops out as said. I used a butter knife myself but you can use a special tool, after that its pretty self explanatory, a few screws and voila. There is actually quite a bit of room in there

I had my after market radio installed in my Ex because the dealership paid for it...anyways, its an easy install. I watched the guy do in 15 minutes. Very simple as I installed multiple stereos in my 91 SHO.

I forgot about the surrounding haha. they sell at interior crow bar. its a plastic small crow bar. it does wonders walmart like 5 bucks if I remember right. if not a wide flat screw drive works

There is actually quite a bit of room in there

i dont know if an xlt is different behind the radio than an eddie bauer, but mine had almost no room back there. i also put a double din unit in with the steering wheel control module and the alpine video bypass module. i had to put my sirius tuner under the dash under the steering wheel because there was no more room back there.

I am looking at instaling a aftermartet radio in my 2005 ford explorer sport tract and would like to know do i need a wireing harness for the change over and is it fairly easy to do. I would appriciate any help you could offer me.

most after market radio's need a harness adapter to go from the ford harness to the radio of choice.

I will be sure to pick up a harness adapter before starting the job it sounds like I can tackel this myself instead of paying $130.00 to them. I appriciate your help and all the information I have received from this forum it has saved me a lot of money just finding out how i can do it myself.
Thanks again

unfortunately wallmart is a good place to look. but you may end up at like crutchfield some place like that
