installing warn hubs procedure.

Well, I was supposed to change my hubs last weekend. I said to my self the hell with it, I'll do it this weekend and of course, its going to be 15 degrees colder, -3 Saturday morning, and snow on Tuesday. Murphy's law - anyway.

When I received my warn hubs and conversion kit. There was no grease in the kits. Do I need to grease these things and what kind should I buy?

Also, I getting confused on the conversion. Will I have to remove the rotors, calipers and wheel bearings as well?

I had read his article on

but when i recently did a brake job, i notice all the lubricant on the end of the axel shaft and was not sure if i should re-grease the end. Was also curious about the removal of the bearings because of some ford diagrams I had seen on one of those ebad ford explore cds.

When I got mine last month. They were pregraesed, and you do not have to take off the calipers and rotors. The instructions are pretty clear but if you need more info try

Should take about 1/2 hour per side. Really easy for me and thats coming from someone who is not that mechanically inclined.

The only grease that I used was for repacking the wheel bearings. It only took about 45 minutes to do the whole thing.

Awesome, Did the job today and back in 4x4. Easy test since the roads in my area are still snow covered. My only gripe was everyone, including WARN gave different torque specifications. Whole job took about 2 hours.

Oh, one more gripe, it was about 3 degrees (up from -2) when i started. Fortunately, I had one of those jet type kerosene heaters for the garage. Brought the temp up to 25 - 30 degrees by pointing the opening towards the under side of the truck.

Anybody can do this Job...

local shops wanted 230+ for hubs only!. If you can wait a few days, connectaccess.com was the cheapest I could find.

Hub change

I did mine two weeks ago was a piece of cake. Watch the torque on those hubs don't torque them too tight. The final torque setting from ford tech service bulletins calls for 16 in/lbs not ft/lbs; this is a huge difference. You crank those down and goodbye bearings. There is nothing inside the hubs that needs grease; they get some from the wheel bearings anyway. If you have a big glob of grease in there they will not work because they will hydro-lock. Check the torque after a couple of 100 miles. You want the outer nut plenty tight Ford says 150 ft/lbs. You can verify this if your library has a subscription to Alldata (Tech service pro bulletins for all vehicles). I didn't buy the socket for the Warn kit I used a big channel lock I seemed to have torqued them right on. Sure cured all of my problems. Now if someone would make an all metal radiator instead of the plastic and aluminum piece of #$%@!!.

Well since I bought my beater for 400.00 I wondering if its worth it. Plus the snow season is almost over. I could put that 200.00 in my Ghost X.
