Intake gasket and valve cover gasket install question

I am about ready to start putting my intake back on and have a question about RTV Gasket sealer. My Chiltons isn't real clear on the procedure. Should I put the RTV over the whole mating surface of the intake gasket and the valve cover gaskets when installing? Anybody have input on past experiences?

I think I understand what my manual is saying about the intake gasket. I just need RTV around the areas where water flows through the intake into the heads/block. What about the valve covers? Do I need anything for those?

According to the book I am using you need some where the head and intake join.

On the 4 corners where the block and the heads mate.
