Soon I will be removing the upper and lower intakes as well as the valve covers on my 94 X. Will I have to flush the coolant when I do this, or can I just top it off and keep an eye on it when I put it back together? Also, is an oil change necessary after this, and if so, how soon after reassembly should I do it? I am going to be doing a home porting/gasket matching job - I'll post the results when I get it done...

Anyone have experience with this?

You just have to drain enough to take the upper hose off, or drain the whole thing and reuse. I wouldn't change the oil unless your interval is due.

Thanks, that helps a lot!

If you haven't gotten them yet, I would strongly recommend Ford's replacement gaskets. Much better and worth the extra $$. You don't want to see any leaks once you finish this job. The whole intake kit + valve covers is around $70-80 from torrie@fordpartsnetwork . Just e mail him with what you need and let him know you heard of him through this site. He's fast.

Also, you may want to order some injector o-ring replacements while you have everything off, or even a new set from Vanir for $225. That's what I'm gonna do this summer if I don't rebuild. Or at the least try Amsoil's Power Improver, cleans injectors really well. Best of luck.

Thanks.. Yeah, I had figured that I would have to break down and get valve cover gaskets. The used intakes that I got had injectors with them with 80K miles on them. My current injectors are at 119K miles, so I plan on using the 80K injectors. Do you think that's a good idea?

How can I clean the injectors while they are out of the vehicle?

If your X is a daily driver and you can't afford a week to send your injectors out than I would pull em and ask a parts store with what to clean them. I've heard of seafoam, boiling in vinegar, brake cleaner, etc... Most importantly though I would replace the o-rings and just run some injector cleaner through followed by a tank of premium and some highway driving. You should be fine. Mine are at 200K and still work fine but I'd like to replace. My body and paint are in great shape so I think I'll either rebuild or put a new engine in and take her to 300-400K as the workhorse.

Thanks.. yeah, the X is a daily driver, but the spare set of injectors that I am going to be using are not in the X at the moment. I was going to replace the injector seals for sure. I sure hope replacing the gaskets will fix my coolant leak. Thakns for the input!
