I got the Dorman. $30 on Amazon. I'm aware of the risks since so many people despise them. But I've had good luck with them. At the end of the day, if the OEM parts are failing that quickly then what do you have to lose?

I took everyone's advice today and changed out the ignition switch. As mentioned above it wasn't a difficult job but when dealing with trim pieces there is always some risk of breaking something. All is good though. Here is a pic of the old and new switch. The old switch is on the left. Looking at the pic it doesn't look like much of a difference between the two but it was obvious in person.

But did it fix your problem?

But did it fix your problem?
Don't know yet. I took it out and the lights didn't come on but it was only doing it sporadically before.

The keyhole on your old one is more worn than mine was. It'll fix your problem 100%.

Yeah - the keyhole in the old one was putting the slop in sloppy for sure. The key cylinder movement feels much crisper now.

I don't know if you're having this problem with your explorer or not, but this guy was spot on with the ignition key being the problem. I took all my other keys off of it and just left the ignition key in. No more problems with the lights.
I mean no offense by this - really I don't. But your ignition key has absolutely nothing to do with this. Your interior lights come on when you open the door - not when you put the key in the ignition. Mine will go out in a moment - which is probably the time you spend moving your key.
